Club Hill Climb Championships 25 Aug 2002

Report: by John Buckton

Thanks to Mark Robertson who assisted me at the finish line as time recorder, Joanne Buckton, starter and Colin Jenkins-Flint who held all the riders at the start.  Twenty two riders turned out for the Club Hill Climb Championships.  Weather was overcast and it had been raining overnight.  The bunch warmed up between 6.30am to 7.00am circulating Centennial Park, then Dave Mackie escorted them to the secret hill climb location.  As luck would have it, rain started to fall just as we started at 7.30am.  Despite the rain and miserably cold conditions, everyone had a great time and some good times were recorded  Tony Horneman was off first with very good reason (he was camera man for the event).  Sam Haeata, set the fastest time of the day but unfortunately there is no photo of you Sam.  You were going so fast you passed the photographer.  W'ell have to give Tony more start next time.

Mark Murdoch was going so fast that he was passing cars.  Here's the gang after the event.  Yeah all smiles now !! Here's Andrew Pike.  Bring on Mon Von Tuo.  Andrew is a lean mean hill climbing machine !

"Stormin" Norman Jew burns up the hill.  Norman will be looking for a new back tyre I'm sure. Some secret training miles have obviously paid dividends for Paul Baker.  Paul managed a top time. Thomas will have to do a bit of work as he was given a lesson on hill climbing by the old man.

John Edmondson is improving all  the time and moving up in the C grade rankings Neil Morris performs well and is looking threatening in the B grade competition. Tony Aitchison scorched up the hill after we told him there was a bacon & egg roll and a coffee at the other end.

Club Captain Report:

Twenty four riders turned up for RBCC’s first Hill Climb. The secret course was Cranbrook Road from Rose bay past Scots College, left turn into Victoria road then finished at the hill top. A few dog walkers were a bit bemused with all these cyclists hanging around  with strange men and women with stopwatches.

A few surprises in the results with Joe Sorbey of the “J&J KHS ultra light team” (Janelle and Joe), flew up the hill to take out the B grade…welcome to A grade!!  Nick Cater, running lighter nowadays now the pin has been removed from his shoulder came in second with Dave Mackay a very close 7 hundredths of a second behind!

Sam Haeata took out A grade by a mere 5 seconds from Matt Lucas. Matt had an excuse his back tyre had a big hole in it. But we had the RBCC tech team check out the damage and they concluded after lengthy examinations and testing that he is a whinger and the excuse was invalid. Aaron after a big night on the town, still came in strong for 3rd.

Ben Still won C grade with a great time which was 5th fastest overall…welcome to B grade Ben!! Matt Tabone is always improving and took out second with John Edmondson 3rd.

Scott Rice rode well and won D grade 2 wins in 2 days a good weekend for Scotty. DJF got second and the all new fit bloke Paul Baker taking 3rd.

Mark Murdoch went well beating number two sons time for a change. Son number one had a great time also 3:53.02 which beat some of the A grade. Janelle was also flying on her new steed and grabbed 2nd  and 1st A grade woman with Norman Jew who had a 2 hour trip to get to the race taking Third.

We also had a couple of non members having a go with Andy Bell who is a courier workmate of Clives doing very well and getting the 2nd fastest time of the day.  Unfortunately we didn’t have any sign up papers with us to join him up to RBCC..Damn. Hopefully he turns up for a race soon so we can grab him!! Dane of the sexy legs dept also gave it a go and came in 13th overall which is a good time for a man who is in the prime of life, bullseye (he will know what I mean)!

Well done to all that rode and thanks to JoJo and John Buckton and Colin Jenkins Flint ( the ace bike holder at the start) I didn’t recognise him in his motorbike gear Sorry!!

            Cheers Mark
