On behalf of all the
Executive & members of the Randwick Botany Cycling Club I would like to
congratulate our
new Treasurer and his wife Charlotte on the birth of their daughter, Katie
White. Katie came into the world about 5am on Monday 24 December.
Katie was 7 and a half pounds at birth. Charlotte, delivered naturally
and WITHOUT pain relief. Well I guess to a veteran of 4 fem Tour de
France's having endured the pain of climbing
"The Pyrénées" and the Alps, child birth must
be like a walk in the park.
We forgive you if you aren't at
training for a while Chris. Get used to this sound
RANDWICK BOTANY RIDERS CATCH UP WITH
STUART OGRADY
A couple of our members were so
disappointed at his non-appearance at the Eastern Suburbs Club Trophy Race
at Heffron Park on Tuesday 18 December, that they flew to Adelaide to see
Stuart race in a crit at Glenelg on Boxing Day, which he won in an awesome
display of controlled power riding. Here he is seen chatting to new mate
Chris Jenkins, who is wearing the RBCC Cap.

CONGRATULATIONS JONATHON CRIDLAND
The Randwick Botany Cycle Club is off to a
good start in the Track Season. Two RBCC junior riders competed in the
NSW State Junior Track Derby Championships (U13 and below) at Dubbo on 1 and 2
December 2001. Jonathon Cridland took bronze in the U13 500m time-trial,
with Luke Davison fifth. Jonathon was placed 6th in the 8-Lap Scratch Race,
closely followed by Luke Davison. In the Sprint Derby, Jonathon made it
through the elimination rounds, to line up in the 2001 NSW State Sprint
Derby. He finished fourth by the narrowest of margins. Luke Cridland
competed in U15 support races and scored 3 first places and 1 second place.
Peter Davison had a go in some senior support races but finished out of the
placings.
In all,
around 40 Randwick Botany Cycling Club members took part in this years
Sydney to the Gong Multiple Sclerosis Society charity ride.
Our official team of 33, 12 of whom were Junior riders as young as 11,
competed together assisting each other and staying together over the
entire distance. It was a fantastic day with the Junior
Development Officer and other seniors riding with the juniors and
assisting them (even pushing some of the younger ones up some of the
hills). All managed the distance and I rewarded each of them at
the finish with a nice cold Gatorade.
Club Photo
Day successful.
The Club photo
day was finally conducted on Sunday 21st
October, the day after our Open meeting, the Snowy Wilson Memorial.
Our Thanks to Ernie Smith who raced over from the Vets races at Homebush to
get to Heffron in time for an 11 am start. Thanks from the entire
club, Ernie.

they lapped the field and each came first in their respective
divisions. Congratulations guys
Joanne Hall and Sarah Rockell
did Randwick Botany proud with a first and third in the Women's
event. Joanne winning outright and Sarah being first U19 woman
home.
Randwick Botany Cycle Club is
very excited to have Peter Zala come onboard to assist in the Junior
Development portfolio. Peter will be assisting our Junior Development
Officer, Jason Webb. Peter is an accredited Level 1 coach with the NSW
Cycling Federation and is also a Level 1 (currently doing level 2) Triathlon
coach and State coach with Triathlon New South Wales. Peter will be specialising in the younger junior riders up to the U15's. Peter has
put together an exciting training program for the young cyclists.
Luke
Cridland selected to compete
at the National Club Championships in Queensland on 22 September 2001.
Luke had a strong ride at the recent NSWCF
Junior State Road Championships in Bowral on Saturday 8 September 2001,
which secured him selection in the team to go to Maroochydore
next week for the National Road Championships. There were
other great performances also from the five other Randwick Botany riders
who competed in the State Title events. Congratulations to Luke Cridland, Chris Jenkins, Robert Cater, Samantha Guille, Pita Vea, and

I would also like to extend a huge thank you
to all who pitched in to make the day a success including Fred and the
canteen staff, the chefs at the BBQ, the entry takers, the commissaires,
the scruitineers and especially the track marshals who sat in remote
locations for up to 3 hour stints. Thanks also to everyone who
helped us to set up and then pack away all the tents, banners etc. Thanks
to everyone who helped to make the day an outstanding success.
- John Buckton Club President & Webmaster.
Our Club Photo which had been
scheduled for today Sat 28 July has had to be postponed to a date yet to
be fixed. We will re-schedule
the photo for some time in the not to distant future. Saturday
racing was also cancelled. The BBQ/Time Trial social day was a
great success in spite of the bitterly cold day, drizzly rain and gale
force winds. Approximately 30 junior & senior riders raced and a
magnificent BBQ lunch was enjoyed by some 40 plus people after
racing. In spite of the gale force winds, Chris White again won the
time trial in a time of 3 minutes and 3 seconds. Many thanks
to Helen who made the magnificent salads and fruit salad and Fred and my
wife Joanne who manned the canteen and prepared all the food. Thank
you to the St John Ambulance staff who pitched in and even washed up
the dishes ! Congratulations to those junior riders who won encouragement
awards, Chris Jenkins and the flying Rosse brothers Antoinne and Raphael.
Huge
thankyou to RBCC member Chris White and the staff of the Newington
Inn.
A
big thankyou to Chris White for his hospitality on the Tour de France
Mega social evening at the Newington Inn on Friday 20 July 2001. A great night was had by
all. There were approximately 40 people at the venue, including
friends from other cycling clubs. Most of us ate first and enjoyed a
lovely dinner. Everyone then sat back to enjoy the race in
comfortable armchairs in front of the huge TV screen. We
recommend the Inn to anyone who wants a a nice meal and a pleasant evening
all a very reasonable prices.
Congratulations
Shaun Higgerson Silver medal at
NSWCF Individual Time Trial Championships at Calga on 15 July
2001.

Luke
Cridland takes the Silver Medal at State Titles
Luke won the silver medal at
the NSW Criterium Championships held at Dunc Gray Criterium circuit on
Saturday 30 May 2001. Luke won his medal in the Under 15 Mens
division. After comfortably placing first in his heat, he went on to
place second in the final behind Tyler Mclaughlin of Southern Cross club.
Shaun Higgerson has placed second in the Mens under 19
Road Championships at Wetherill Park on Monday 11 June 2001. Shaun
in his first year as an under 19 rider broke
away with Chris Sutton in the early stages of the
race and were able to stay away from the bunch. A witness to the race,
Ken Cridland observed that Shaun just lost Sutton's wheel in the last 1.5k
and placed second. Congratulations from your fellow club members
Shaun. We knew that Shaun was in good form when he rode a grade in our
club criterium race on Saturday and gave some of the seasoned A graders a
bit of a shake up.
In other news, congratulations to Chris White who
finished just out of the placings in 4th place in the Masters 4 division at
the Sydney Masters Road Championships at Homebush on Sunday 10 June.
Congratulations
Chris Jenkins on your maiden road race.
On 6 May Chris Jenkins entered his first ever open
road race during the Wagga Junior Tour. Because the handicapper had
never even heard of Chris, he was asked to compete in the Under 17 Men
B Grade events.
Not daunted by the competition, Chris
elected to compete in the A grade competition. Chris has trained
extremely hard over these past 12 months and all the hard miles paid off
and his his confidence was boosted with bunch finishes in the two road
races and the criterium. Congratulations Chris from your fellow club
members and we look forward to places in the near future.
Excellent
results achieved by Randwick Botany members at the NSW Masters State
Championships 7 & 8 April 2001.
Two of our members,
Chris White and Gai Cridland, competed and came home with a swag of
medals. Chris White our latest State Gold Medallist added to his tally
with three further silver whilst Gai took home three bronze medals. Click

The members and Executive of the Randwick
Botany Cycle Club are saddened to announce the death of ex member and
former President of the club, Keith Harris. Keith was active in the
club for many years especially with the juniors. Our thoughts and
condolences go out to Keith's family. Keith's funeral was held
on Thursday at 1.45pm at Palmsdale Crematorium Hillside Chapel.
Keith
was held in high regard by the cycling fraternity as evidenced by the
attendance at his funeral of Ray Godkin, Ron Bonham, Alex Fulcher, to name
but a few. Also attending were many of his ex juniors and some of
the current juniors who he has encouraged since moving to the Central
Coast. The Club and all visiting riders held 1 minutes silence before the start
of the criterium race at Heffron Park on Saturday 7 April
in memory of
Keith.
I found the following document (1995
newsletter). It contains a Christmas greeting from Keith, the
newly elected club president. It records the winning of Metro Track
championship medals (three Gold) by five of our then Juniors in the U17
& U19 categories. I hope that it serves to assist in reflecting
back to fond memories of Keith and the club in 1995.

resident professional Paddy Jones currently competing in South America.

Luke
Cridland Competes at the National Track Championships in Brisbane 21 - 24 March 2001.
Randwick Botany rider Luke Cridland, aged 14, was selected in the 18 strong NSW team to compete in
the National Junior Championships held recently in Brisbane. All
states where represented with riders ranging in age from 12 to 16 years
old. Luke's best result was 12th, out of a field of 24, in the 2km
pursuit race. "It was a great experience to compete at that
level", Luke said on his return home. "I also competed in the
5km Scratch Race, but fell and tore my state jersey during the race.
Luckily, the organizers where able to replace the jersey with a new
one". Luke added.
High Altitude Training Camp at Jindabyne.
Our Club Captain has
organised yet another high altitude training camp at Jindabyne for Randwick Botany members.
(See Coming Events for latest details).
This trip has a very colourful history,
Randwick
Botany rider Luke Cridland selected to represent New South Wales at the
National Track Championships in Brisbane 21 - 24 March 2001.
Luke
Cridland has been selected to represent New South Wales at the Australian
Junior Track Titles in Brisbane between 21 to 24 March 2001. It is
well deserved and all of Luke's hard training is reflected in his
excellent results in the recent State Titles. It certainly must not
have been an exceptionally hard decision, on the part of the selectors,
when Luke was
made part of the State team.

Luke Cridland and Kate Buckton proudly wore the Randwick Botany
colours and represented our club at the NSW Junior State Titles held on
Sat & Sun 24 & 25 February 2001. Luke was particularly
successful earning bronze medals in both the Under 15 Men's Individual
Pursuit and the scratch race. Kate was unlucky to miss out getting
on the podium with a fifth place in the Under 17 Women's scratch
race.
Randwick Botany riders
achieving fantastic results at the recent Track Opens.
There has been a good representation by Randwick Botany Club members
at the recent Track Open meetings and some good results have been
obtained. Our team has consisted of the following dedicated Track
Specialists: Dean Preddy, Chris White, Gai Cridland, Luke Cridland,
Johnno Cridland & Kate Buckton. Check out the following links:
Centennial Park Trust
engages consultants Sinclair Knight Merz to undertake Transport, Access
and Parking plan for Centennial Park.
On 1 Feb 2001 I represented the Randwick Botany Cycle
Club at a 3 hour consultative meeting in respect of the study. I was
pleased to see representatives from Bike East at the meeting
voicing the views of cyclists. I was a little disappointed to find
that I was the only person representing a Cycle Club. Some of the
options proposed, if implemented, would have a devastating effect on club
training in the park. Such strategies as speed calming (speed humps)
in The Grand Drive and pedestrian crossings to name but a few. I
would call on all cycle clubs or cycle groups to attend the next meeting
to ensure that the cyclists point of view is put forward. The final
meeting is scheduled for Thursday 1 March.
Our Club Captain, Jason Webb organised a
Club Training Camp over the Australia Day long Weekend. Chris White
was able to arrange a fantastic venue which was described by the boys
& girls who went as absolutely fantastic. So too was the
price of only $20 per person per night which, as unbelievable as it
sounds, included breakfast and fruit/lunch on the rides. Tremendous
support for the riders was provided by Richard & Maria Jenkins, who
arrived at designated venues to feed all with delicious salad rolls,
muesli bars, bannanas and bottles of Powerade. Our gratitude is extended to Chris for
procuring such a fantastic venue. Ten (10) club members went
down. The guys and girl
averaged 120 to 130 kms per day through some very demanding climbs
including Jindabyne to Charlottes Pass, Jindabyne to Thredbo and
Jindabyne to Dalgetty. The weekend was extremely successful and
Jason and Chris are organising another away weekend in the not too distant
future. We are hoping to get some more members down to the training
camp. It is not only a great training venue but a fantastic holiday
and opportunity to really socialise, build friendships and enjoy the
company and comradery of fellow club members.
Memorable moments: Scott Buckton ordering 2 main meals on Saturday
night (a growing lad no doubt). Peter finding the cereal bowls
too small and using a fish bowl to hold his cereal & fruit (Peter
continued to make a pig of himself all weekend...where does he put it
all), Chris Jenkins discovering what a "Pick-a-Plank bridge is
(nothing Dettol cant fix), Jason being just Jason (Always
memorable).
Randwick Botany riders take multiple
medals at the Metropolitan Track Championships.
