SPONGEE TAKES OUT EVERY
EVENT AT HIS FIRST EVER TRACK OPEN.
What a magnificent weekend it was for Chris Jenkins with
a first place in A grade in the Saturday afternoon
criterium at Heffron. Then pretty well straight
after the crit we headed out to Tempe Velodrome for the
Turramurra Cyclery Track Open at Tempe Velodrome. Spongee, in his first ever track race (be it open or
club race), won everything that he went in. To

he mixed it with the big boys in Division one in the
final criterium on the Cycling NSW calendar, Round 4 of
the Lidcombe Criteriums at Homebush on Sunday 24 Nov.

RBCC JUNIOR TRIATHLETES
On Sun 17 November 2002,
Round 2 of the State junior triathlon series was
held at Forster. RBCC had 3 athletes competing Pita
Vea & Tamas Bykerk competed in the 12-13 yrs age
group swimming 200m, riding 12kms & running 2km.
After the swim Pita came out of the transition area
in equal first place, and as the 2 leading boys ran
out and mounted their bikes Pita found his shoe had
fallen off the pedal and was back in the transition
area. After returning to the boxed off area
and retrieving his shoe, Pita had fallen back to
tenth position but with a super fast ride through
the 12kms, Pita managed to bring himself back into
2nd position and as the athletes entered the
transition area to exit onto the run course, Pita
had exited neck to neck with another athlete from
the SWEAT Tri Club. Pita had another great run
to pull away and finish the 2km run in 2nd overall.
Tamas, being a first year 12-13 yr old finished 9th
overall making it 2 in the top 10 out of around 40
competitors.
Andy Powell raced in the
14-15 yr category, Andy had an average swim coming
out of the water just behind the leading pack but
unfortunately Andy's rear tyre had a slow puncture
and deflated towards the end of the bike leg making
it very difficult work for the youngster and by the
time he hit the run leg he was cramping which made
it an all out effort to just finish the course.
Results: RBCC first
Triathlon medal. Congratulations Pita.
Thanks to Peter Zala for the story
VALE GRAHAM JONES
It is with great sadness that I put a name
and face to the cyclist who was killed last Sunday whilst
out on his Sunday Morning ride. Graham Jones of the
Bicisport club was a great bloke and will be sadly missed.
Many members would remember Graham and his daughter Angela
at our last Jindabyne training Camp. Graham is pictured
standing between Spongee and Robbie with big Mick and myself
immediately behind him. (Click on photo to enlarge)
CONGRATULATIONS SARAH & MARK
Our own Mark "Slapper" Robertson is a daddy.
Little Ella came into the world at 11.30pm Sunday
10 Nov. According to reports Dad was a bit misty
over the whole experience. I suspect the
experience may have even been a tad emotional for Sarah
as well given that she had to endure a 22 hour labour.
Well little Ella came into the world 3 weeks early
weighing 2.6 kilos and measuring 48cm in length.
Mother and daughter are doing well. The Slapper is
recovering as well apparently. Sarah and Ella are
currently at the Royal Hospital for Women at Randwick
but may well be discharged tomorrow. So just check
first before visiting or sending flowers. Well Slapper you are excused for missing the Club
Championships on Sunday. We will

Congratulations Brittany
Orr, new Oceania Games Women's U17 Champion.
On Friday 25
October 2002, Brittany won the Oceania road race as
well as the Individual Time Trial. Lining up for the Women's U17, 39km Road Race,
Brittany again blitzed the field to win in a time of
1hr 5min 20sec. Second place went to Genna Crean also
from Australia, 32sec behind, with New Zealand rider
Lauren Webb in third place. Other Australian riders
included Tori Freeland, Melinda Harris , Jessica
Tanner, Jessica Armstrong, Amanda Sprat, and Eve Hood.
Congratulations to our own
Brittany Orr who on Thursday 24 Oct 2002, won the U17 Women's Time
Trial event as part of the Oceania Games in New
Zealand. The race was conducted over a 10 kilometre
course which was undulating and very fast on the way
out, however on the way home the girls had to contend
with a very strong headwind. The New Zealand girls
were allowed to use full time trial bikes with aero
equipment attached and the Australian girls stuck to
their normal bikes and wheels as per Australian rules.
The Aussie girls were also undergeared compared to
their New Zealand counterparts as the New Zealand U/17
gears rollout is11cm longer than the Australian
allowance. Despite these restrictions,
Brit finished the 10km course in 16:25min, 11 seconds
ahead of top U/17 New Zealand rider Tahnee Gudsell
(2nd) 16:36 and Kathryn Jones (3rd) 16:44. The next
best Australian girl, Tori Freeland, was placed 7th
in a time of 17:07, 42 seconds behind Brittany.

RBCC proud.

On behalf of the members of the Randwick Botany Cycling Club I
would like to extend a huge thank you to Promoter Kevin Young.
Kevin has taken the bull by the horns and got people using our world
class Olympic velodrome. Last Friday night was week 5 since the
series started and the nights racing was absolutely spectacular capped
off with an exiting 80 lap madison. Competitors are growing all
the time and there were 64 last Friday night. I recommend Friday
night track racing to everyone to improve their leg speed, maneuvering &
sprinting skills. For the Juniors, Brad & Lionel Cox are there
training the champions of the future. I have seen only 3 other RBCC riders there so far being Ken Woodhouse, Janelle Lindsay and Peter
Davison. So get your track bikes out, dust them off and get up
there for a fantastic nights racing. Believe me, you will get a
workout and you won't be disappointed. Full Details

News
from the Tour de Femme
Congratulation to all our girls who competed in the Tour de Femme
over the weekend of the 1st & 2nd June. Congratulations to Joanne
Hall, Leslie Fine, Melanie Rassam, Marika Kahle, Leanne Koh, Janelle
Lindsay, Belinda Angwin, Britney Orr and Robyn Stanning.
Nine in all. For several of the girls it was their first ever
open.
Belinda Angwin finished 2nd GC in division
4 ( D grade), Jo Hall finished 3rd GC in division 3 ( C grade) and
Britney Orr finished 7th GC division 2 ( B grade). Britney got a 3rd
in the TT but JDO, Peter Zala tells me that she needs a little more
bunch racing practise for the criterium. Belinda came second in the
crit. Mel Rassam was also outstanding. She raced B grade and kept up
with the leaders finishing 9th in the road race with Britney finishing
5th in the road race. Jo Hall came second in her road race and Belinda
Angwin came 4th in her road race.
Robbyn Stanning came down with the flu
after the TT but still managed to stay with the bunch in the crit till
27min out of 30 min and then the Team manager sent her home due to her
illness. Bad luck Robyn.
Reports that the elite uniforms looked
very impressive yesterday when Brit and Robbyn were on the front.
Stay tuned, more info as it comes to hand.

AARON
CASTLES, SECOND PLACE IN THE KEN DINNERVILLE ON SUNDAY 26 May 2002.
Congratulations to Aaron for a fantastic
ride in the Ken Dinnerville. He and Northern Sydney rider Ross
Hodgson got away at about the 10km mark and managed to hold off the
charging scratchies for 80 kilometres. Ross, an extremely fit
Masters 4 rider was able to get away from Aaron, when his legs began to
cramp, with about 5km to go to
take the win. Congratulations to our other entrants, Joe Sorby,
Scott Callum, James Grant, Neil Morris, Ron Sproule, Chris Jenkins, Hans Vische
and Steve Bligh. Joseph and James had a baptism of fire in their first
ever open being put off with the 9 minute bunch. I only made it to
the second lap before the old back packed it in and I became a spectator
and part of the cheer squad with my wife Joanne, Ritchie and Maria
Jenkins and Mark Robertson. None of our ladies competed but we
forgive you as you are obviously saving yourselves for a big Tour de
Femme. --- John Buckton
RANDWICK BOTANY
MAKES CONTACT WITH DAUGHTER OF SNOWY WILSON.
Further to the recent sucessfull running of our 40th Snowy Wilson Memorial
Open, the Randwick Botany Cycling Club has finally made contact with the
Snowy Wilson family. Phyllis
Gilbert is the daughter of Snowy Wilson – the longest serving Secretary of
the Randwick Botany Cycling Club. Phyllis was born in Botany in 1923 and is
now aged 79. She lives in a tranquil location on Dangar Island near
Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River.

Incidentally, Phyllis told us that she took after her dad in many ways.
One does not have to be Einstein to work out why her dad was called "Snowy"
or "Snow" Wilson.

Maroubra Cycles for donating the magnificent mountain bike.
Congratulations to second place getter Roy O'toole for winning the $450 of
bicycling accessories kindly donated by

40th Snowy Wilson Memorial Criterium a fantastic success.
What a great way to display our new Elite
uniform, from the the first place position of the winner's podium.

irony of the win was such that he then covered up our elite uniform with

Team Introduced
On Saturday 20 April the first of four of our Junior Elite
team was introduced to Randwick Botany members. So too was the new
Randwick Botany Elite uniform. Our sponsor, the Newington Inn has
provided substantial funding to be channeled into Junior Development.
Identified Elite riders are issued with Elite knicks, jerseys and skinsuits.
The Elite uniform is a blend of the basic design of the existing Randwick
Botany uniform but incorporating the distinctive black and white colours of
the Newington Inn. The picture left depicts Mr Chris White, Director
of the Newington Inn, introducing the team in the Randwick Botany Clubhouse.
Team members from left are Chris Jenkins (U19), Britney Orr (U17), Robyn Stanning (U17) and Robbie Cater (U17).

(Latest News
from Michael's wife Jamila as of 29 April 2002)
Congratulations once again to our new State Individual Time Trial
Champion. It's becoming rather monotonous but Chris White has once
again taken GOLD. Chris won the Masters 4 2000 metre Individual time
trial at Dunc Gray Velodrome on Sunday 24 March 2002 in a time of 2
minutes, 34 seconds and 25 hundredths (2:34:25). Congratulations
also to Ken Woodhouse who in his first ever Individual time trial went
out to try and break a goal of 3 minutes. Ken got really close
with a PB of 3 minutes and 6 hundredths of a seconds (3:00:06).

Peaking as Track Season draws towards an end.
In one of the final Track
Opens for the year, at Hurstville Oval on Sat 16 March 2002, one of our Under 13
boys, Luke Davison had a blinder. Luke won just about everything in
his age division on the night. His results were:
Under 13 Boys 3 Lap Derby
- 1ST Under 13 Boys Sprint - 1ST, Under 13 Wheelrace (from
Scratch) -6th (2 laps lead rider on 190m), Under 13, 4 Lap Scratch -1ST.
As Road Season approaches
Robbie Cater's form is HOT!! Yesterday the under 17 year old rider did
a 2 minute 53 second lap around our Heffron Park Criterium circuit.
The record is 2 minutes 46 but that was done quite a few years back on
unrestricted gears. After that little warm up Robbie competed at the
Manly Warringah McCarrs Creek 40 kilometre road race on Sunday. Robbie
showed the A grade field that he is not scared of a few hills and was
part of a 3 man break-away up the difficult climbes of West Head and Akuna
Bay, finally finishing second in A Grade. Also representing our club
were, Neil Morris, Mark & Thomas Murdock and Robbie's father, Nick Cater.
Nick also had an incredible ride, puncturing in the C Grade race, changing
the flat and chasing back on and still managing a fourth place. Thomas
Murdock rode well in D grade and managed a third place. Congratulations guys
and well done.
If you are wondering about
the RBCC Masters Team Time trial, don't bother. We were down to 3
riders of a possible 4, the Flu took another one, and then a training
accident took another. The mind was willing but the flesh was weak.
As one of the team said, "At 50 years old you don't seem to bounce off the
bitumen quite as well as when you are younger".
