RANDWICK BOTANY RIDERS INJURED BY COLLISION
WITH CAR
It is with mixed emotions that I tell you
that our Club Captain Janelle Lindsay, Adam
Hogan and
Joanne
Upton (Paddy Jone's girlfriend)
were all seriously injured on Southern Cross
Drive Eastlakes early on Sunday morning.
I say mixed emotions because I am
experiencing upset, sympathy, disappointment
and a little anger. This coming so
close on the heels of the Loftus incident in
which several Sutherland "Bushies" were
injured in what appears to be similar
circumstances. A motor vehicle
collided straight into the back of three
cyclists apparently not even seeing them
till it was too late.
Janelle is in a lot of pain only able to lay
on her back. More tests will be
conducted today but x-rays so far have
revealed that she has fractures in her
shoulder, hip, pelvis and vertebrate in her
back. Adam has a broken collarbone.
All three have lots of skin off from sliding
down the road. What will be
devastating for Janelle will be the fact
that she was to have flown out on 20th of
this month to compete in the European track
championships to be held in Prague in
September. Janelle, with visually impaired
team mate Lindy Hou were strongly favoured
as a big chance of bringing home a medal for
Australia. After Praque, their sights were
to have been firmly fixed on the Paralympic
games in Athens in September 2004. All
this now is in serious doubt because of the
actions of one careless driver.
I
will update Janelle, Joanne and Adam's
conditions as they come to hand. In
the meantime please feel free to use our
guestbook if you would like to send them
a get well or the like and I will see that
they get your messages.
Update: Thursday 11 September. Janelle
left hospital and went home today.
She tells me that she with a bit of luck she
will be off the crutches in about another 2
weeks. She is bearing more weight on
her lower back and pelvis on a daily basis.
Couple of weeks should see both the girls
off crutches as little Joanne Upton is on
the improve as well. Janelle is
coming to Sutherland on Saturday to catch up
with everyone and hopefully she will also
catch up with some of the Sutherland girls
as well. It's great to have her
back.

CENTENNIAL PARK TRUST ADMINISTRATION SUGGEST THAT
BUNCH CYCLISTS TRAIN ELSEWHERE THAN IN CENTENNIAL
PARK.
After 2 years of negotiations with the
Administration of the Centennial Park and
Moore Park Trusts, they have informed Cycle
Centennial that big bunches of cyclists are
intimidating to other park users and
suggested that it might be better if
training cyclists did not train in
Centennial Park. In fact in keeping with
that suggestion, they have even offered an
alternate location. (Click here for

LIAM KELLY WINS SYDNEY
ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Liam Kelly rode an absolutely
fantastic race to win the Sydney Road Championships at
Parramatta Park on Saturday 7 June 2003. Liam adds
Sydney Road Champion and Sydney Metro Champion titles to
his impressive resumé,
which includes being the current Master's World Champion.
It was truly an awe inspiring event to watch Liam attack
a field of over 90 riders on several occasions to
finally get away in a break of four and build some 1
minute gap on a field of some of the best riders in the
country. The 4 man break was able to hold
the gap for the last 8 laps of the race, and Liam took
the final sprint for the line and claimed victory.
Also impressive rides from the others in the race,
including Matthew Lucas, Brendan Ingram, Aaron Castles &
Dave Gardener. Great ride also from Robbie Cater
who came 4th in the Under 19 Mens.
BRENDAN INGRAM
WINS WAGGA WAGGA 120km HANDICAP
Congratulation Brendan on your excellent
win in the Sid Demmery Memorial at Wagga Wagga on Saturday
31 May 2003. Two RBCC riders, Brendan and Will Gray
competed and both have supplied excellent reports on the
event. Will
had a fantastic ride gaining 3rd place overall in the recent
Ken Dinnerville (see story 4 down). Wagga belonged to
Brendan however. For Brendan and Will's exciting accounts of the

SHAUN HIGGERSON & LIAM KELLY. FANTASTIC RESULTS IN THE TOUR DE
PERTH.
Congratulations to Shaun on a fantastic 3rd place overall in the
prestigious Tour De Perth over 24 & 25 May 2003. Shaun had a
good prologue time trial then came second in the road race stage
and wore the yellow jersey into the final criterium stage. He
finished third in the general classifcation. Liam Kelly also
had a fantastic tour finishing 16 overall in the general
classification.
RBCC GOOD RESULTS AT
THE 47th KEN DINNERVILLE MEMORIAL
Congratulations to Will Gray,
Mark Robertson and Michael Murdoch who placed third,
fourth and fifth in the 47th running of the Ken
Dinnerville 90 kilometre handicap at Dapto on Sunday

At the recent
2003 Oceania / Australian
Track Championships held at Dunc Gray Velodrome
between 30 April and 4 May, Randwick Botany rider
Janelle Lindsay with disabled co-pilot Lindy Hou brought
home two gold medals and two Silver. The girls thought
they had the 200 fly in the bag when they went out and
broke the world record but were relegated to Silver when
the Western Australian team of Janet Shaw & Leeanne
Manderson took another 14 hundredths off the world
record and took the gold with an average speed of
59.38kph. The girls did learn a couple of things
like its hard enough to control a tandem at the best of
times but add a couple of disc wheels and you've
really got a handful. A fantastic effort saw the
Girls bring home Gold for New South Wales in the Kilo
and the Sprint and Silver in the Pursuit and the 200
metre Fly. Fantastic Effort girls !!!!

Murdoch for seamless organisation and quiet efficiency.
Big
Mick for helping out his dad with the
arrangements.
Joanne,
Alison, Maria and Colin for driving the support cars and
bringing the extra warm clothes
and food. Marek for being a great photographer and providing
photgraphic evidence of the pain we went through in the name
of fun!Also
to everyone else it made it a good fun and a hard
training camp.
Here’s to next year.
RBCC JUNIORS PERFORMING WELL IN TRACK, TRIATHLON & MOUNTAIN
BIKING.
Adriano Maradini came
second in the "Stars of the Future" race at the Clarence Street
Cup at Dunc Gray veledrome on Sat 22 March 2003. Adriano
is pictured with Australian World Champion, Sean Eadie.
On the Triathlon scene, RBCC member, Pita Vea placed second in
the under 14's at the All Schools NSW Triathlon Championships at
Penrith on Thursday 20th March and has been selected to
represent NSW at the National Tri Championships in Brisbane
14th April. On the Mountain Bike scene, Tyron Bicknell competed
in the Australian Interschools MTB Championships at Thredbo on
15 & 16 March 2003 against about 70 riders in his age group
(Division 2 - years 9 and 10). Tyron was sitting
comfortably 4th at the half way mark when he had a major stack
in a fast downhill section, came off and lost over 3 minutes but
in a gutsy ride managed to pull back time and finished 9th.
Congratulations to our Golden Boys, Chris White and John
Buckton. RBCC has 2 new State champions. Chris
won the Masters 5 and John Buckton won the Masters 4
Individual Pursuit championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome on

JANELLE LINDSAY NOW TRACK
TANDEM STAR.
Our own resident
female track star, Janelle Lindsay has teamed up with Lindy Hou,
a visually impaired rider as part of a new paralympian tandem
team. The girls are flying and have already qualified and
will represent Australia at the European track championships to
be held in Prague in September.
Last week, the dynamic duo managed a Level 1 qualifying time for
the 200 fly. (Level 1 being not more than world record
plus 5%). I saw the girls training at Dunc Gray on
Thursday and they looked fantastic as they flashed by me.
After Praque, their sights will be firmly fixed on the
Paralympic games in Athens in September 2004. Go girls go
!!
Congratulations
Janelle from all your clubmates.
CONGRATULATIONS JANELLE LINDSAY OUR NEWEST STATE MEDAL WINNER.
Two of our track stalwarts represented RBCC at the Southern
Highlands Cup incorporating the NSW Points Race
Championships, held at Dunc Gray Velodrome on Saturday 22
February 2003. Both Janelle Lindsay and Adriano
Maradini had a fantastic meet, with Janelle picking up the
Bronze Medal in the Women's NSW Pointscore Championship.
Adriano likewise rode like a champion with 2 first places
and a second. Adriano was a member of the winning U13
Men's Team Sprint with fellow riders, J Bennet, J Robinson
and A Dalley. He came second in the first 5 lap
scratch race and won the second 5 lap scratch race.
Adriano is pictured in action to the right.

2002 Women’s World Cup
Champion cyclist Petra Rossner and reigning German National Champion
Judith Arndt, from the international Equipe Nurnberger Cycling Team,
have chosen Randwick Botany Cycling Club to base their preparation
for the 2003 Women’s Cycling World Cup Round 1 to be held in Geelong,
Victoria on Sunday 2 March 2003. From there the girls will go to
Italy then on to seven other race locations around the world.
Petra,
36, from Leipzig, Germany won gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in
the Individual Pursuit and was a member of the 2000 German Olympic
Team in Sydney. She was placed first in the 2002 Women’s World Cup
and ranked 4th in the 2002 world rankings. Judith also had a
successful 2002, winning the German National Road Title and finished
5th in the world rankings.
Both riders joined local
Randwick Botany Cycling Club riders in early morning training rides
around the Eastern Suburbs (not to mention tearing the legs off the
Club President during a little training ride, the distance of which
might best be summarised as one that was a little longer than he
normally does)
Pita Vea places second in the NSW
State Junior Triathlon Championships
Pita Vea,
representing Randwick Botany, raced hard to place 2nd in the 12/13's
NSW State Junior Triathlon Championship at Orange on Sunday 9th Feb.
Congratulations to Pita and a big thank you to our Junior Development
Officer, Peter Zala, for all the time and effort he puts into our
young athletes to get such great results. Here's Pita on the podium
proudly wearing his Randwick Botany uniform.
The
"PRINCE OF HEFFRON" Smashes one lap record.
Robbie Cater, the newly
crowned "PRINCE OF HEFFRON" has smashed the one lap record for Heffron
Park. The record has stood for some ten years and was set back
last century by RBCC member Jeff "Doc" Jones at a blistering 2mins 46
seconds. Robbie carved 3 seconds off it and set a new track record
at 2 mins 43 seconds which is just a whisker under 45kph average speed.
That's really traveling around the sharp corners of Heffron Park.
Conditions were perfect with no wind, a very rare occurrence at Heffron
Park. The win even more impressive when one considers that Robbie
did it in his junior restricted gearing. For full results,

RBCC 2003 Club Championships. First Round run & won.
The first round of the 2003 club championships was conducted on 1 Feb 2003.
It was a grueling 10.2 kilometre Individual Time Trial with a nice big hill
to finish up. Some 36 riders competed. Congratulations to Robbie Cater
who won in a sizzling time of 13 minutes and 46 seconds, more than 30
seconds faster than the next nearest competitor. The results of the
Individual Time Trial can be viewed
