JOSH MARDEN TAKES OUT
THE FIRST
HUGE PRIZE MONEY EVENT ON OFFER AT RBCC's SATURDAY RACES
AND TAKES HOME $250. |
Dec 3 onwards there will be a handicap criterium conducted on
the first Saturday of every month. The D, E & F handicap
will commence at 4pm and the A, B & C handicap will commence at
5pm. In an effort to encourage more A grade riders to race
on Saturday and with the help of our major sponsor FRF,
HUGE PRIZE MONEY will be on offer for the A, B C handicap.
1st place is $200:
The other placings are as follows:
Handicap 1st = $200.00
Handicap 2nd = $110.00
Handicap 3rd = $80.00
Handicap 1st Unplaced A Grade (If A
does not catch)= $50
Handicap 1st Unplaced B Grade (if no B
grade in placings))= $50
Handicap 1st Unplaced C Grade (if no C grade
in placings) = $40
fastest time: =
$50
If you
are an A grader and you come first then you will also
record the fastest time and therefore your total prize
money will be
$250. If you are
first A grader home and not in the placings then it is
likely that you will still record fastest time and will
therefore still collect $50 unplaced A and $50 fastest
time or
$100.
Normal scratch races for grades will be conducted on the
remaining Saturdays of the month. Times will be the same with D,
E & F grades commencing at 4pm and the A, B & C grades
commencing at 5pm. Prizemoney will be similarly fantastic
as follows:
A Grade 1st
$150.00
A Grade 2nd
$90.00
A Grade 3rd $60.00
It is our hope that A graders give the Callouzi training ride a
miss and actually race on Saturday. |

RBCC HAS A
NEW WORLD CHAMPION - CONGRATULATIONS PETER HEYWOOD |
|
 |
Well it's
not in cycling but we reckon if you are good enough to
be a world champion of anything you a worthy of a pat on
the back. Pete is the new World Masters 45-55
Laser Class Sailing champion. The World
Championships were conducted recently in Brazil.
The Laser is a one man 4 metre Olympic class boat and
Pete had two races per day over 7 days which saw him in
the boat for 6 hours per day. It was very
exhausting and Pete relied heavily on his fitness.
Pete told me, "My training rides with RBCC were a vital
part of my preparation. I was always amused in the
coffee shop as other riders struggled to loose weight
while I was desperate to gain any gram I could."
Good on you Peter, Well Done !! |

the 2005 Grafton - Glen Innes for Women Road
Race
Laura took out
the Women's equivalent of the Mens prestigious Grafton to
Inverell this year by winning the 160km Womens Grafton to

even further ahead in the Road Woman of the Year series.
Last year RBCC rider Peter MacDonald took out the Mens
Grafton to Inverell and Laura has backed it up with a win in
this year's Womens event. Congratulations Laura.
Great work from all your team mates at Randwick Botany. |

FINAL ROUND OF RBCC 2DAY
TOUR CONTESTED AT INTERNATIONAL REGATTA CENTRE, PENRITH LAKES. |
|
 |
The RBCC Two day Tour consisted of 4 stages this year, a
time trial, two criteriums and a 55km road race (all
handicapped). For the first time ever we held the road
race on the 5 kilometre circuit around Penrith Lakes at the
International Regatta Centre. It was an absolutely
glorious day with not a breath of wind, nor a cloud in the
sky. The Regatta Centre staff were fantastic.
Some 24 members contested the event. Those who did
enjoyed the venue immensely.

VALE AMY
GILLET
"The executive
committee and members of the Randwick Botany Cycling Club are
deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events in Germany. We
extend our condolences to Amy Gillett's family and friends and
hope Katie Brown, Lorian Graham, Kate Nichols (Katie and her dad
Kevin are well known by club members and regulars at Heffron
Park opens), Alexis Rhodes and Louise Yaxley make a quick
recovery."

cyclingnews.com
You never think that
it could happen to you and then last November it happened to me.
It's happening to far too many riders. As cyclists we have
all lost or had friends seriously injured in confrontations with
motor vehicles. I think Cadel Evans summed it up most
aptly when interviewed at this years Tour de France, "I don't
think words can do anything. I don't know how many people have
to get killed before society realise how dangerous motor
vehicles are. I feel sorry for the girls, their friends and
family. Very sorry."
We need to change the
public's perception of cyclists. We need for the drivers
of motor vehicles to understand how vulnerable cyclists are in a
confrontation with a motor vehicle and we need to educate
drivers to be vigilant and more aware of cyclists on our roads.
Perhaps a good start
is via a great initiative I came across recently started by
Steven Southwell and that is the Watch for Cyclists bumper
sticker. It would be great if every cyclist had one of
these on the back of their vehicle. Full details are
available on the website at:
www.watchforcyclists.com. This initiative is a non
profit operation and all proceeds goes into production of the
products and advertising of the iniative.

WHERE's DAVE
TREACEY ? |
|
 |
Finally got to the bottom of this mystery.
It appears that most of the internet cafes in Europe are not
smoke free and hence Dave won't go near them. Appears
that he finally found a smoke free one in Gent, Belgium and
finally sent us a report and some pictures too.
Sponsors take note, I have photographic evidence that Dave
raced and placed in the Tour of Malta whilst riding his
RBCC/FRF club kit........(lots)

Troy Glennan in the 43km Elite Men's in a "sub hour"
time of 59:48:45. As a result of this placing,
Josh is now leading the Cycling NSW Roadman of the Year

contender for a National Title in two and a half months.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
OUR LATEST STATE CHAMPIONS |
|
 |
Randwick Botany rider Shaun Higgerson,
sponsored by MG XPower, took out the NSW Men's U23 State
Hill Climb Titles at Bathurst. This is third year in a row
for Higgo if I am not mistaken. Higgo clocked the
fastest time overall (including the Elite Men) up the
mountain in a 8 min 31. In fact Higgo won everything over
the weekend including the crit and the road race. |

Congratulations also to RBCC's Josh
Marden who took second place to ex RBCC, rider Pete "The
Machine" McDonald, now of Caravello, who took Gold in the
Elite Men's division. Knew it was going to be close
between Higgo and the Machine with only 10 seconds
separating them with Josh only 11 seconds further behind
Pete. Will make for an interesting Jindabyne camp and
the Dead Horse dash next January. Even though Pete has left
RBCC, you might have noticed the close association of the 2
clubs in the uniform and the major sponsors. |

|
VALE BRYAN MARTIN |
|
 |
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of
Bryan Martin. Bryan, a long time member of the
Randwick Botany Cycling Club who moved to Queensland several
years ago, impacted with a guard rail whilst riding his
bicycle a few days ago. The cause of the accident is
not known at this time. Bryan was revived at the scene
and was placed on life support. The life support
system was turned off on the afternoon of Saturday 26 Feb,
after his family had had a chance to visit him.
|
 |
In Searching through the
old photos of Bryan, it suddenly dawned on me that
the big lump of a lad next to him in this photo is
none other than our own Roger Crawford. Roger
reckons that this photo is most likely day two of
the Coonabarabran to Gunnedah to Tammworth (probably
in the 80's).
Bryan, Marty Millwood
and Roger travelled to numerous country races in
Bryans old milk truck. Bryan and Roger
were a formidable madison team and gave it to the
younger riders on numerous occasions. Roger
and Bryan were die hard track and road riders who
enjoyed their sport immensly. Roger, like many of us
at RBCC struggle to understand how such a competent
rider has been taken away from this world in such
tragic circumstances. We are all deeply
saddened by Bryan's passing. Indeed this
picture has saddened Roger greatly, however in time
I'm sure that it will serve to put a smile on your
face Roger, as you remember the happier times and
the great bloke that Brian was.
|
 |
|
|
Sadly he passed away in the
early evening of Saturday 26 Feb 2005. Bryan died doing something
that he loved and that was cycling. Bryan was involved in all
facets of the sport over the years including track and road and got very
involved in tandem road racing over the last few years. One of my
fondest memories was Bryan and his (female) partner coming underneath me
around one of the sharp corners (in the squircle) in a B grade
race at Heffron two-up on the tandem whilst wearing his trademark
"Stubbies" shorts (he would never wear knicks unless he had to).
Now that's something you do not see everyday. Our deepest
condolences to his family. He will be sadly missed by many of his
old mates at Heffron. |
