REPORT
Seventy-five
senior and junior riders, including six woman riders, registered for the
weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club Graded Criterium at Heffron Park,
Maroubra on Saturday 1 December 2001.
Twenty A and B
grade riders combined for a 18 lap or 36km race. Todd Sinclair and George
Papas set the tempo for the bunch, with U17 Randwick Botany rider Chris
Jenkins taking his turn on the front. John Kenny made it home first in a
time of 59min 36sec with Luke Gowty second and Clive Hammerson third.
Fourth rider to finish was Chris Jenkins.
C grade riders
lined up for a 30km or 15-lap race around the 2km circuit. A fast pace
was set early in the event, with Tony Caruana and David Berle breaking
away from the 21-rider bunch with 8km to go. Caruana and Berle maintained
a 200m lead, until Randwick Botany riders Wayne Goold and Ben Thomson
bridged the gap on the last lap. The foursome raced to the finish line
with Tony Caruana crossing first in a time of 50min 55sec followed by
David Berle and Ben Thomson. Wayne Goold finished in fourth place.
Paul Dimitriou
from the Bankstown Sports Club again dominated the 19-rider D grade race
over 20km. New club member Phillip Chippendale stayed with the bunch in
his first race at Heffron Park. Chippendale commented after the race that
he held on as long as he could and was happy to finish with the bunch.
Dimitriou broke up the field with 4km to go, with St. George rider Irene
Potente taking the lead and finishing first ahead of Joseph Sorby, Carlo
Ghistolfi and Jamie Guinan. Janelle Lindsay finished just out of the
placings. Placegetters in the 16km E Grade event were Andrew Young in a
time of 32min 53sec, Norman Jew and Julia Guinan.
Greg Stokes and
Adriano Maradini (Snr) organised the four junior events, starting with a
2km time trial. Placegetters for the A Grade criterium race were Chris
Jenkins, Keegan Aitchison and Andrew Young. B Grade placings went to Max
Gueniev, Taylor Aitchison and Adriano Maradini (Jnr). Placegetters in the
C Grade race were Jordan Hayman and Morgan Stokes.
