REPORT
In club racing held on Saturday 1 September 2001 at Heffron Park, 15-year-old
tri-athlete Samantha Guille rode strongly in her first senior D grade race over
16km. Samantha recently competed in the Canberra Junior Tour, where she was
placed third in the 8km Time Trial. Samantha said she hopes to develop her
cycling and tri-athlon skills in time for Australia team selection at the Athens
or Beijing Olympic Games. Final placings in the D Grade event was Peter Craig -first in a time of 29 minutes 29 seconds, second was John Lynch followed by Allan Sumner. Andrew Pike finished just out of the placings.
Newcomer Nicholas Armstrong worked hard in the combined B/C Grade event over
24km. The 15-rider bunch averaged over 36kmh in wet and slippery conditions
which tested rider skills around the tight Heffron Park circuit. B-Grader
Aaron Castles led out in the closing laps to lift the pace for the final sprint to the
line. Jayson Brenton crossed first in a time of 40 minutes 6 seconds, followed
by speed ice-skater Matthew Lucas and Brendan Dunn. Craig Dempsey finished in
fourth place.
15 Junior riders participated in 4 events in rain. The 2km Time Trial was won
by Thomas Murdoch in a time of 3 minutes 37 second. Chris Young's time was 3
minutes 42 seconds and Mark Woodhouse 3 minutes 45 seconds. The A Grade 14km
scratch race was won by David Jenkins-Flint, followed by Chris Young and Thomas
Murdoch. The B Grade 10km event was won by Belinda Guille, with Mark Woodhouse
second and Andrew Young third. C Grade 6km race was won by Adriano Maradini
