REPORT

Club racing returned to Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 11 August 2001 after a successful Junior Open Cycling Carnival last weekend.

After 18 laps of the 2km circuit, Anthony Spurgeon from Team Caravello won the A Grade race in a time of 57 minutes 7 seconds.  Second was Phil Kelaher followed by Chris Rule.

A large field competed in the B Grade 32km event that saw a 200m, 4-rider breakaway, mid-way through the race.  Randwick Botany U17 rider Chris Jenkins and two others bridged the gap to bring the group back together.  Mark Robertson made a solo breakaway with 6km to go but the B Grade bunch worked together to catch Robertson for a group sprint to the line. John Kenny crossed first in a time of 50 minutes 24 seconds.  Second place went to Garry Oliver with Jayson Brenton in third place.

The C Grade race was conducted over 28km with a high average speed of 37kmh.  Frank Conceicao crossed the line first in a time of 45 minutes flat.  Ross Mackay claimed second place with Nick Rule third.

Under 15 junior rider Keegan Aitchinson won the 20km D Grade event in a time of 36 minutes 57 seconds.  This is the first time Aitchinson has won the Senior D Grade race.  Neil Morris came second with Mark Shying third.  Andrew Pike won the E Grade 14km race in a time of 32 minutes with Luke Davison second and Norman Jew third.

Randwick Botany juniors Chris Jenkins, Robert Cater and Luke Cridland practiced their Team Time Trail skills in a 14km demonstration event.  The team is preparing for the State Championships at Calga on 2 September 2001.

Twenty-five junior riders competed in three events.  A Grade results: Liam Fletcher, Michael Murdoch and Thom Murdoch.  B Grade: Chris Young, Peter Vea, Thom Richards.  C Grade: Tyrone Davies, Raphael Rosse, Nicholas Mellick.

The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 28 July 2001.  Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm.  For more information about the club, please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.
