REPORT
Stewart Campbell
dominated the 36km A/B Grade criterium race at Heffron Park, Maroubra
during the Randwick Botany Cycling Club race on Saturday 15 December
2001. The ten A/B riders stayed together until the halfway mark when a
group of five comprising Stewart Campbell, John Kenny, Luke Gowty, Clive
Hammerson and U17 rider Chris Jenkins, broke away. Campbell did most of
the work at the front and lifted the pace to drop Hammerson and Jenkins
with 8km to go. The remaining 3 riders fought out a tough sprint to the
line with Campbell finishing only half a wheel ahead of Kenny, with Gowty
half a bike length further back.
Randwick Botany
Cycling Club welcomed back Hans Visch to C Grade racing, after a couple of
years on the Tri-athlon circuit. Visch rode strongly in the 12-rider 28km
C Grade event. Wayne Goold, Brad Lane and John Droz made short breakaways
during the race to test the other riders. With 400m to go, the bunch
sprint was started by Tony Horneman who led until 100m from home. Lindsay
Monks, who had tactically drafted behind Horneman down the straight,
surged ahead to claim first place, with Tony Caruana finishing second.
Horneman finished in third place.
Carlo Ghisolfi,
was a member of the 1956 Italian Olympic Cycling Team in Melbourne. He
now is a D Grade cyclist and claimed first place in the 20km D Grade
race. Ron Sproule was placed second with Jamie Guinan coming home third.
Melanie Rassan, from the Brats club finished sixth. The 16km E Grade
placing were Luke Davison first, Ken Woodhouse second and Julia Guinan
third. Kevin Blanchfield competed in the F Grade 16km event.
Club President
John Buckton officiated over five Junior events, starting with the 2km
Time Trial. The best time was recorded by Keegan Aitchison 3min 32sec,
followed by Pita Vea 3min 38sec and Thom Richards 3min 39min. U17 riders
Chris Jenkins and Robert Cater teamed together for an 18km Team Time Trial
and recorded a time of 28min 18sec. The A Grade 12km Scratch Race was won
by Keegan Aitchison in a time of 23min 46sec. Second was Chris Young with
Mark Woodhouse third. The B Grade 8km Scatch race placings were Luke
Davison, Tomas Bykerk, Max Gueniv and Adiano Maradini in fourth place.
The C Grade 6km race was won by Tylor Aitchison with James Warne second.
