REPORT

Twenty-one A and B Grade riders lined up for a 32km race around Heffron Park, Maroubra in the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club meet on Saturday 15 September 2001.  Randwick Botany rider Ben Meadley, who recently moved from Blackburn in Victoria, set an average speed of nearly 40kmh early in the race causing some B graders to be dropped from the bunch.  Meadley broke away with Aaron Castles and Todd Sinclair to establish a 100m gap ahead of the field with 12km to go.  Stewart Campbell demonstrated explosive power to bridge the gap late in the race and went on to cross the line first, closely followed by Ben Meadley and Todd Sinclair. Patrick Jones was placed fourth.  Jones recently returned from Chillan in southern Chile after a short time with the ‘Rabie-Chillian’ professional cycle racing team.

In his second C Grade race and second win in a row, Randwick Botany rider Andrew Garman showed excellent rider tactics by preserving his energy throughout the C Grade 28km race to sprint away in the closing 400m.  Craig Dempsey claimed second place with Tony Caruana third.

U15 junior Keegan Aitchison mixed it with the senior riders in the D Grade 20kms race.  Tanya Bosch was well positioned leading into the final straight but Ron Sproule proved too strong and sped away to claim first place.  Aitchison finished in second place, with James Guinan third.  Tanya Bosch finished just out of the placings in fourth place.  The E Grade 12km event was won by junior Luke Davison, followed by Norman Jew and Luke’s dad Peter Davison.

Junior Coach Peter Zala and Club President John Buckton officiated over four junior events, starting with a 2km time trial.  Over 20 Junior riders tried their best over the 2km distance with Chris Jenkins dead heating with Robert Cater.  Both riders recorded a time of 3 minutes 7 seconds.  Keegan Aitchison had the next best time followed by Thomas Murdoch.

The Junior A Grade 14km Scratch Race was won by U17 rider Chris Jenkins in a time of 24 minutes 40 seconds.  Second was Robert Cater and Keegan Aitchison third.  In the Junior B Grade 10km race, Pita Vea rode strongly to take out the event is a time of 19 minutes 30 seconds.  Second was Michael Murdoch with Belinda Angwin third. Thom Richards finished in fourth place.

Junior C Grade riders competed over a shorter distance of 6km.  Adriano Maradini crossed the line first in a time of 15 minutes 40 seconds.  Second place went to Tyrone Davies followed by Raphael Rosse and Antoine Rosse.
