REPORT
Nicos Demetriou, aged 20 from Cyprus, was the star of Randwick BotanyvCycling Club race at Heffron Park held Saturday 17 March 2001. Nicos competed in the A/B Grade, 36km criterium race around the tight Heffron Park circuit at Maroubra.  Averaging over 40km per hour for most of the race, Nicos broke away from the pack of 20 riders with 3 laps to go and rode solo to the line.  Some way back was second place getter Grahame Betts followed by Matthew Warner-Smith.  Nicos used the Randwick Botany Club race as part of his preparations for competitions in San Marino, Italy, in May 2001 and Japan later in the year.  B Grade results where John McKenzie first, Clive Hammerson second and David McAlpin third.
C grade averaged a steady 36km per hour during their 30km race, Alex Simmons set the pace and broke away 3 times during the race, only to be caught by the 17 strong C grade pack.  Alex made his final attack 750m from the finish line and was almost caught by Shaun Ballesty and Stephen Bligh, who came second and third respectively.
Fifteen D Grade riders competed in a 20km race, which was won by Jeremy O'Brien, followed by Lindsay Monks and Ron Sproule.
Randwick Botany junior Chris Jenkins, aged 15, featured in the Junior 8km Handicap race, winning for the second week in a row.  Chris's form has improved steadily over recent months being competitive in Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club and Sutherland Cycling Club senior races held recently.  Second place went to Adriano Maradini, aged 9 and third was David Jenkins-Flint aged 15.
Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts training rides for affiliated licenced riders each Sunday morning leaving Heffron Park car park at 6.30am sharp.
The next club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 24 March 2001.  Juniors start at 1pm and Seniors 2.30pm.  Spectators are well catered for with a well-stocked canteen and plenty of shade to watch the action.
