REPORT
Seventy-four senior and junior riders registers for the weekly
Randwick Botany Cycling Club Graded Criterium at Heffron Park, Maroubra on
Saturday 17 November 2001.
A gusty north-easterly wind slowed the sixteen rider B Grade
bunch around the back of the circuit during the 32km race. Randwick Botany rider Aaron Castles and John Kenny made a
break midway through the event. But
recently married Matthew Lucas and U17 rider Chris Jenkins worked together
to bridged the gap. Chris
White made a valiant solo effort to catch the breakaways but found it
tough going into the wind. White
was in sight of the lead group by the last lap.
John McKenzie worked hard to finish second behind Castles, who won
in a time of 52min 28sec. Third
place went to Michael Prince. Average
speed for the B Grade race was 37kph.
The start line was crowded with thirty C Grade riders for the
28km race. Newcomers Victor
Paciocco and Fab Tettoni stayed with the bunch to the end in their first
race at Heffron Park. Veteran
rider Shaun Ballesty showed remarkable riding skill when he was stung on
the head by a honey-bee. Ballesty,
who was leading the race at the time, momentarily removed his helmet to
release the bee. After
re-securing his helmet, he rejoined the race to finish with the C Grade
group. In a wind assisted and
hectic bunch sprint to the line, Brad Lane thought he had it won 50 metres
out, but Stephen Bligh stormed past Lane to win in a time of 49min 20sec.
Third place when to Ross Mackay.
New riders also featured in the placings of the 20km D Grade
event. Robert de Beus, won in
a time of 36min 49sec. Second
was Greg Smith, followed by Peter Nieass in his first race with the club.
Peter Zala, the club Junior Development Officer, conducted six
events for the 18 junior riders. First
up was the A Grade 18km Team Time Trial.
Robert Cater, Luke Cridland and Chris Jenkins teamed up to record a
time of 31min 40min. Times
for the B Grade 2km Time Trial were Thomas Murdoch 3.31, Chris Young 3.35,
Keegan Aitchison 3.46. The C
Grade 4km Time Trial times were Adriano Maradini 9.20, Tyrone Davies 9.43,
Taylor Aitchison 9.49. The A
Grade 10km Scratch Race was won by David Jenkins-Flint followed by Michael
Murdoch and Chris Young. B
Grade Scratch Race placings were Pat Boland from the Lidcombe club,
followed by Mark Woodhouse and Thomas Murdoch.
The C Grade 6km Scratch Race placings were Tyrone Davies, Adriano
Maradini and Taylor Aitchison.
