REPORT
Randwick Botany U17 rider Chris Jenkins came within seconds of
taking out the combined A and B Grade race at Heffron Park, Maroubra on
Saturday 22 September 2001. After
36 grueling kilometres, Jenkins led the bunch of 20 riders in the final
sprint to the line. The sight
of a 16 year old junior rider leading the premier A/B Grade event of the
day over the final 200 metres caused the small crowd of spectators to
erupt with applause to urge Chris home.
Three riders just got past Jenkins in the final metres of the race
with Team Caravello rider Anthony Spurgeon crossing the line first in a
time of 60 minutes 25 seconds. Second
was Nick Rule with Paul Hanley third.
Jenkins finished fourth followed by Peter Lynch.
Peter Russell established a 100m lead over the C Grade bunch
early in their 30km event. After
the bunch re-grouped midway through the race, Craig Dempsey made a 500m
breakaway that he maintained to finish first in a time of 52 minutes 47
seconds. U15 rider Keegan
Aitchison was well positioned leading into the last lap but Russell won
the bunch sprint to claim second place just ahead of Andrew Hudson.
Robert Ingle broke away from the 16-rider D Grade bunch halfway
through their 20kms race. Nick
Contigiou led out in the second half of the race but pulled out before the
race finished. First across
the line was Peter Tzikas in a time of 36 minutes 29 seconds with Brad
Playford second and Frank Campbell third.
The 16km E Grade placing were Luke Davison first, followed by Mark
Woodhouse, Ken Woodhouse and Kevin Blanchfield.
