REPORT
Two Caravello Joinery Team riders featured in the major placings in the Randwick
Botany Cycling Club race at Heffron Park, Maroubra, on Saturday 26 May 2001.
Fresh from a win in the Canberra 3 Day Tour in early May, Klayton Smith was just
beaten by Anthony Spurgeon in the A Grade 36km event. Spurgeon's winning time
was 53min 19sec with an average speed of over 40km/h. Third across the line was
Randwick Botany rider Andrew Foggin.
Twenty-three B Grades lined up for their 32km, 14-lap race. Tony Ianacito dominated the event making several breakaway attempts. The large group managed
to chase Ianacito down after each break. In one of the most spectacular finishes
for some time at Heffron Park, the entire B Grade bunch sprinted for the last
300m, reaching speeds of over 60km/h. Ianacito won by half a bike length in a
time of 46min 46sec. Jaysen Brenton came second and David Johansen, third.
C Grade maintained a steady pace in their 28km race. The first 3 places where
claimed by Randwick Botany riders. John Droz came first in a time of 47min 3sec,
followed by Wayne Goold and Brad Lane. 36km/h was the average speed. Junior
Luke Cridland (U15) worked hard to stay with the C Grade bunch and finished with
the pack.
Two junior riders where placed first and second in the D Grade, 20km event.
David Jenkins-Flint (U17) won in a time of 35min 47sec with Liam Fletcher (U17
Manly Warringah) second. Herve Boutin was placed third.
Richard Jenkins has been racing for only a few months and claimed first place,
for the first time, in the E Grade 16km race. Jenkins winning time was 34min
21sec. The next rider home was Julia Guinan followed by junior Jonathon Cridland (U13). E Grade average speed was 28km/h.
In the Junior 6km Handicap, First place went to Antoine Rosse, followed by
Adriano Maradini and Morgan Stokes. The fastest time was Luciana Smith.
The 10km Handicap race for juniors was won by Thom Richards, with Jonathon
Cridland second and Luke Davison third. The fastest time was by Chris Jenkins.
