REPORT

With many people heading out of Sydney for the long weekend, fifty-six senior riders and 15 Juniors still managed to turn up and compete at the demanding Heffron Park Maroubra criterium circuit on Saturday 29 September 2001.  Exciting racing took place under a magnificent blue sky and howling northerly wind.

A couple of big names made the A Grade event interesting.  Steve Williams, national senior road champion and Paul Rowney, Sydney 2000 Olympian shared much of the workload.  Eastern Suburbs rider Stewart Campbell (alias `Computer’) tried to psych out the opposition by starting the race with brightly dyed purple hair.  The pace was on from the start.  By lap 2 Steve Williams turned up the pace and attacked followed by Paul Rowney.  The two riders got a gap of about 30 metres from the bunch but were quickly brought back.  The fast pace took it’s toll however on some of the weaker riders and by lap 3 two of the A grade riders had been dropped.  The race then settled down and the peleton worked together until about 9 laps to go when Computer attacked again with Anthony Spurgeon on his wheel.  Steve Williams and Paul Rowney then came across the gap and it looked for a while as though the group of four would work together and stay away from the bunch.  This was not to be however, and the bunch once again came together.  Throughout this time Randwick Botany U19 rider, Shaun Higgerson (16 years old) was not only staying with the elite A grade bunch but also doing his share of the work.  With 4 laps to go Shaun attacked and pulled a gap of about 40 metres on the bunch, followed out by Steve Williams.  These two shared turns and for a while looked as though they were going to stay away but again the peleton fought back and caught the attacking riders.  Shaun looked very determined as he crossed the start/finish line and received the bell with one lap to go and led the A grade field into the final lap.  Steve Williams was too strong though and led the sprint out right to the finish with Stewart Campbell on his wheel in second.  Anthony Spurgeon looked all set to make that now famous final Spurgeon sprint finish but the pace must have taken its toll on him and he looked content to settle for third.  The average speed of the A Grade race was just under 40kph.

The B Grade pace was similarly fast and the windy conditions quickly took its toll on the riders.  Such was the pace that there were only 4 riders left with 10 laps to go.

There were plenty of attacks in the C grade race as well with different groups trying to get away from the main bunch at different times during the first half of the race.  With 7 laps to go however, the peleton came together and the commissiare judged this to be the perfect time to blow the whistle for the sprint prime.  The next lap saw Tony Carauana take out the prime (pronounced preem).  The sprint must have taken it’s toll on Tony because he had nothing to throw at them in the final sprint.  Randwick Botany rider Steven Bligh took out first place from Eastern Suburbs rider, Frank Conceicao second.  Steve has been spotted out training regularly lately and it is obvious that it has paid off.

Randwick Botany rider Nick Contogiannis was too strong for the D grade bunch in the windy conditions.  The bunch was very well behaved and stayed together for most of the race.  With 4 laps to go, Nick attacked and started to test the competition.  In a well-planned race Nick finished first just in front of fellow Randwick Botany riders, Ron Sproule and Paul Baker.

Luke Davison was too strong for the 14km E Grade race and easily finished first, followed by Mark Woodhouse, and Julia Guinan.

Junior Development Officer Peter Zala stirred up the juniors this week by conducting much longer than usual individual time trials.  The A grade junior men had to complete over 8 laps or 16kms.  B Grade did 8 kms. The A Grade Junior women did 6 laps or 12 kms and the C grade boys did 2 laps or 4 kms.  At the completion of the individual time trials two 2 lap scratch races were also conducted for B grade and C grade juniors.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW.  Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm.  For more information please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.
