REPORT
Randwick
Botany rider Shaun Higgerson stunned spectators and fellow riders alike
with his awesome performance in the A/B Grade 32km criterium race at
Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 6 October 2001.
Higgerson broke away on the first lap from the 18-rider bunch early
in the event and rode solo for the remainder of the race averaging over
40kmh. He crossed the line
nearly 2 minutes ahead of the peleton and completed the last 2km lap in
under 3 minutes. Higgerson's
winning time was 47 minutes 51 seconds.
Second across the line was Jeff Jones in a time of 49 minutes 9
seconds. Third was Todd Sinclair followed by Stan Genakis.
Eastern
Suburbs Cycling Club rider Dale McCormack made a 200m break-away mid-way
through the C Grade 28km race. Tony
Horneman bridged the gap but could not maintain McCormack’s pace.
McCormack finished first, well ahead of the 30-rider bunch, in a
time of 46 minutes 33 seconds. Peter McRorie finished second followed by Alex Krawchuk in
third place.
Europa
Cycles, Kingsford salesman Alan Abeni won the 15-rider D Grade 20km event
in a time of 36 minutes 20 seconds. Ron
Sproule claimed second place followed by Brad Playford.
D Grade average speed was over 33kmh.
The
16km E Grade placings were Julia Guinan first in a time of 34 minutes 10
seconds. Second was Norman
Jew followed by Kevin Blanchfield.
The
Junior 2km Time Trial was won by Luke Cridland in a time of 3 minutes 28
seconds. Second was Keegan
Aitchison and third was Chris Young.
New member, Tomas Bykerk rode strongly in his first ever time trial
at Heffron Park.
The
Junior A Grade 14km scratch race was won by Chris Jenkins with a time of
25 minutes 12 seconds. Second
was Keegan Aitchison and third was Luke Cridland.
The B Grade 10km event placings were Thom Richards first in a time
of 21 minutes 59 seconds, with Andrew Young second and Jonathon Cridland,
third. C Grade junior riders competed over 6km and was won by Adriano
Maradini in a time of 14 minutes 57 seconds followed by Tyrone Davies and
Antoine Rosse.
Randwick
Botany Cycling Club conducts club racing every Saturday at Heffron Park,
Maroubra NSW. Juniors start
at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm.
