9TH ANNUAL JOSEPH SUNDE MEMORIAL CRITERIUMS

Fifteen Randwick Botany Cycling Club members joined over 160 riders, including Tour de France La Francaise Des Jeux rider Brad McGee, in the 9th Annual Joseph Sunde Memorial Criteriums held at Heffron Park on Australia Day Holiday, Monday 28 January 2002.  Organised by the Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club with proceeds from the event and raffles donated to the Children Cancer Institute of Australia.

The first race of the day was the 40min plus 3 lap 55-rider Masters Men/Women Scratch Race.  Brad Lane, Herve Boutin, John Droz, Erol Ozdik, Wayne Goold and Neil Morris battled it out with some other top veterans.  Final placings were 1st Liam Kelly (Eastern Suburbs), 2nd Rochelle Gilmore (Bankstown), 3rd Trent Illife (Eastern Suburbs), 4th Walter Machado (Hinchinbrook) and 5th John Sunde (St George).

Wayne Goold and Neil Morris backed up in D Grade for the 15 lap 60-rider B/C/D Graded Handicap race, and were joined by Sean Ballesty, Dale Rockell, Chris Young, Matthew Tabone and Tony Horneman.  C Grade RBCC riders were Jason Webb and John Hadley.  The only B Grade RBCC rider was Aaron Castles.  D Grade, with a 1min 30sec start, managed to work together and stay ahead of B and C Grades.

B Grade was in sight of D Grade as they started their sprint to the line. Steve Newman (Eastern Suburbs) was placed first with Craig Dempsey (Eastern Suburbs) close behind.  Sean Ballesty (Randwick Botany) stormed home to claim third place with Wayne Goold (Randwick Botany) in fourth spot.  Fifth place went to Danny Gatt (Waratah).  The first C Grader was Paul Duncan (Sutherland) and the first B Grader was Charles Toffler (Parramatta).

The major race of the day was the 54-rider A Grade 60min + 3lap race.  RBCC was very proud to have Dean Preddy represent the club in this event.  It was an impressive sight to see Dean powering down the strait during the race shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Brad McGee.  Dean lasted to close to the end of the race when the pace quickened for the final laps. Placings were 1st Jeff Hopkins (Bankstown), 2nd Mike Tillman (Net Zero USA), 3rd Paul Rowney (Eastern Suburbs), 4th 4 Brent Dawson (Jelly Belly), 5th 5 Brad McGee (Francaise Des Jeux).

Eastern Suburbs Cycling Club acknowledged the assistance of Randwick Botany Cycling Club in staging the event.  Helen and Fred Vella were thanked for helping to setup, organising a sausage sizzle and opening the canteen.  Chefs Richard and Maria Jenkins did a great job on the BBQ too.  As usual, Roy McGill and assistants from St. John Ambulance were on hand for the event and fortunately were not called into action.
