NSW Hill Climb Championships

Eight of our juniors participated in the NSW Hill Climb Championships on 22 June 2002 and three are now State Champions.  The Course was 7 kilometres inclined distance at an average grade of 8%.  I'm told however that it was not all that average and had a rather nasty kick in the later part of it.  Robbie Cater fell foul of this particular section as he had broken away from the peleton assuming the incline to be pretty average.  When he was presented with the "kick", he found that he had spent a little too much fuel staying away from the peleton.  We can all learn a valuable lesson from this.  Look at the course before you race it.

Eight of our junior riders contested the event which was conducted in the Wallsend area.  Pita Vea, Robbie Cater, Chris Jenkins, Shaun Higgerson, Britney Orr, Robyn Stanning, Ben Orr and Amy Eager.  Congratulations to all competitors but special congratulations to Shaun Higgerson who won the Under 19 Mens event.  Amy Eager who won the Under 19 Womens event and Britney Orr who won the Under 17 Womens event.  Great work by Pita Vea to take 6th place in the Under 15 mens (especially given that rumour has it that he dropped a chain and had to get off and fix it and then chase back on).  Great work also by Robyn Stanning with an 8th place in the Under 17 women's event.

Our Junior Development Officer, Peter Zala, took the team up but reports that he only saw the U17 Womens race.  Peter gave me the following snippet,

" The day was sunny and great. Each age started seperately, and the town is a nice quiet little village that the cyclist came and took over.  I didn't see all the races,  I only saw the race start and then when they rolled back down to the start area.  The only race that I did see was the Under 17 Womens.  I watched Britney and Robyn.  I saw Brittany,  Amanda Sprat, and Eve Hood make a breakaway in the last 2 kms, then Brit and Eve dropped Amanda in the last K and then at the 500m mark I screamed at Brit and she picked up the pace and was able to drop Eve and come across the line on her own about 300m ahead."

Congratulations again to our 3 new State Champions from all your clubmates at RBCC.  A big thanks to Peter Zala also for having the athletes in such fantastic form.
