The World No. 2
woman cyclist, Judith Arndt 25, from Leipzig, Germany joined fellow Saturn
Team member Petra Rossner at the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club Criterium race at Heffron Park on Saturday 23 February 2002.
|
Arndt and Rossner represented Germany in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and are
preparing for Round 1 of cycling’s World Cup to be staged from Cooma to
Thredbo next month.
Competing in B
Grade, the Saturn Team members drove the bunch for 16 laps of the tight
2km Heffron Park circuit. Arndt lead out in the final sprint with Rossner
on her wheel. John Kenny jockeyed for a good position but Rossner stormed
through to take first place, followed by Kenny and Dave Watkinson.
The 10-rider A
Grade race over 36km featured riders preparing for the Tour of Tasmania
starting next week in Hobart, including Anthony Challinor from the Avanti
Blackman Bicycles NSW Team. Randwick Botany rider Shaun Higgerson rode
strongly and was second wheel, down the finishing strait, behind Anthony
Spurgeon from Team Caravello. Spurgeon crossed first with Jeff Jones
getting up to take second place. Higgerson finished third.
A 4-man
breakaway, which included Randwick Botany’s Michael Murdoch and Club
President John Buckton, stole the show in the 22-rider C Grade race over
28km. The breakaway maintained a 200m lead for most of the race. The
back-markers worked together to catch the foursome for a bunch sprint to
the line. In a tight finish, C Grade first-timer Will Gray finished
first, only half a wheel ahead of Buckton with Kelvin Haisman third.
The D Grade
event was conducted over 20km with Brendan Scarf finishing first, with
birthday boy Phillip Chippendale second and Ron Sproule third. Results in
the E Grade 16km race were Luke Davison first and Norman Jew second.
Eight junior
race events were conducted. Results follow at the end of this report.
Randwick Botany Cycling Club
