REPORT
Eight “A” Grade
riders competed in the Randwick Botany Cycling Club Criterium race at
Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 23 March 2002. Three riders broke away
by lap five of the 36km race. Randwick Botany’s Shaun Higgerson, Dave
Stewart, from Eastern Suburbs Club and Tom Brook from the Parramatta Club,
almost lapped the field by the end of the race. Final placings were Brook
first, in a time of 55min 25sec. Stewart second, Higgerson third and
Randwick Botany’s Aaron Castles fourth.
B Grade
maintained a steady pace in their 32km event with Matthew Lucas making a
solo break with 7 laps to go. First place went to Lucas (Randwick Botany)
in a time of 53min 30sec followed by Craig Dempsey (Eastern Suburbs) and
Dave Mackey (Randwick Botany).
Twenty-two
riders lined up for the C Grade 32km race with Stephen Pearson from the
Auburn Lidcombe club setting the pace early in the event. Newcomers Nick
Murray and Simon Gallagher stayed with the bunch to the end. Joseph Sorby
and John Buckton made a strong breakaway midway through the race. Sorby,
who was doing most of the work at the front, punctured on the last lap
leaving Buckton to coast home for an easy win, in a time of 50min 55sec.
Second place went to Dave McPherson with Pearson finishing third.
Sixteen D Grade
riders raced for 20km, with Peter Davison (Randwick Botany) claiming first
place in a time of 36min 49sec. Second place went to Con Roubis (Sydney)
with Peter Nieass (Randwick Botany) third. Julia Guinan and Kevin
Blanchfield took out the placings in the 14km E Grade race.
In other senior
track racing news, Randwick Botany “Masters 4” rider Chris White has won
the NSW State Individual 2km Time Trail at Dunc Grey Velodrome on Sunday
24 March 2002, in a time of 2min 34sec.
Junior racing
results included a U17 Time Trial over 12km with Thomas Murdoch recording
a time of 23min 19sec. Michael Murdoch’s time was 24min 41sec. The U15
Time Trial over 10km was won by Andrew Young in 20min 50sec, with Mark
Woodhouse recording a time of 21min 09sec. The U13 Time Trial over 8km
saw Bede Kelly score a time of 18min 58sec with Luke Davison second. The
U11 Time Trial over 4km was won by Scott Harding from the Southern Cross
club in a time of 8min 10sec. Jack Bennett from Bankstown Sports Club
recorded a time of 8min 30sec. Adriano Maradini’s time was 9min 25sec.
Placings in the Junior A Grade scratch race over 6km were
Michael Murdoch first in a time of
12min 12sec followed by Andrew Young and Thomas Murdoch. The
Junior B Grade race over 4km was won by Adriano
Maradini in a time of 9min 32sec followed by Tyler Hailwood and Nicholas
Mellick.
There will be no Randwick Botany
Cycling Club racing on Saturday 30 March 2002 due to the Easter long
