REPORT

Eight “A” Grade riders competed in the Randwick Botany Cycling Club Criterium race at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 23 March 2002.  Three riders broke away by lap five of the 36km race.  Randwick Botany’s Shaun Higgerson, Dave Stewart, from Eastern Suburbs Club and Tom Brook from the Parramatta Club, almost lapped the field by the end of the race.  Final placings were Brook first, in a time of 55min 25sec.  Stewart second, Higgerson third and Randwick Botany’s Aaron Castles fourth.

B Grade maintained a steady pace in their 32km event with Matthew Lucas making a solo break with 7 laps to go.  First place went to Lucas (Randwick Botany) in a time of 53min 30sec followed by Craig Dempsey (Eastern Suburbs) and Dave Mackey (Randwick Botany).

Twenty-two riders lined up for the C Grade 32km race with Stephen Pearson from the Auburn Lidcombe club setting the pace early in the event.  Newcomers Nick Murray and Simon Gallagher stayed with the bunch to the end.  Joseph Sorby and John Buckton made a strong breakaway midway through the race.  Sorby, who was doing most of the work at the front, punctured on the last lap leaving Buckton to coast home for an easy win, in a time of 50min 55sec.  Second place went to Dave McPherson with Pearson finishing third.

Sixteen D Grade riders raced for 20km, with Peter Davison (Randwick Botany) claiming first place in a time of 36min 49sec.  Second place went to Con Roubis (Sydney) with Peter Nieass (Randwick Botany) third.  Julia Guinan and Kevin Blanchfield took out the placings in the 14km E Grade race.

In other senior track racing news, Randwick Botany “Masters 4” rider Chris White has won the NSW State Individual 2km Time Trail at Dunc Grey Velodrome on Sunday 24 March 2002, in a time of 2min 34sec.
