REPORT

Rider numbers were down at the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club combine cycle races on Saturday afternoon 26 October 2002 at Heffron Park, Maroubra due to a club time trial and criterium race earlier in the day.

An all-in 30km handicap race was conducted for thirty A, B, C and D grade riders.  The seven A-Grade riders worked together to chase down the other grades who received a substantial head start.

George Pappas from the Dulwich Hill club rode well but Liam Kelly from the Eastern Suburbs club was the strongest.  Kelly won the event and also recording the fastest time of 46min 3sec and an average speed of just under 40kph in blustery conditions.  Second place went to Ian Gardener (Eastern Suburbs) and Pappas third.  The first B-Grade rider to finish was Andrew Kilday (St George).  The first C-Grade rider was Randwick Botany’s Simon Gallagher and the first D-Grader was Alan Sumner from the Dulwich Hill club.

The handicap event was something different to the normal Saturday's racing but it was clear that many of the riders enjoyed it from the big smiles on their faces.

 .

Three junior events were conducted starting with the Junior A Grade 2km Time Trial.  The best time was recorded by Keegan Aitchison, 3min 34sec.  Belinda Angwin’s time was 3min 51sec.  Sam Buckland time trial times have continued to improve over recent weeks.  Sam recorded the same time as Adriano Maradini, 4min 30sec.  Patrick Jenner’s time was 5min 57sec.  Placings in the all-in Junior 10km Handicap race was Micheal Murdoch, Adriano Maradini, Sam Buckland, Keegan Aitchison and Belinda Angwin.

Coverage of local cycling results can be heard on Sydney’s Eastside Radio 89.7FM “GAME ON” program, hosted by Brad Cooke, each Saturday morning from 10am to 11am.
