Ninty-four, 4-person teams, entered in the Cycling NSW Team Time Trail
Championships held at Calga, NSW on Sunday 17 August 2003. Eight of
those teams were Randwick Botany members. We would have had nine teams
only that the anchor woman of our women's team, Janelle Lindsay, is still in
hospital hardly able to move thanks to the actions of a careless driver.
Good news is that Janelle is recovering well. Joanne Upton,
pictured right, who was was also involved in Janelle's accident was in great
spirits at the Team time trial. Jo was on crutches all day unable to
sit because of a fracture in her spine but still managed a beaming smile
even past the sticking plaster and facial injuries still apparent on her
face. Paddy doesn't look too smitten does he? The day was a
fantastic day It for Randwick Botany in
terms of bonding and team spirit. Even though we didn't
take any medals we will be back bigger and better next year. Thanks to
all our support crew, including all the drivers, Peter Higgerson, Greg
Smart, Richard Jenkins, Mel Rassam, Debbie Taylor, Scotty Rice, Tony
Aitchison and Frank and Rocky Fortuna. Thanks also to Rocky for the
great photographs. Photographs below are roughly 50/50 split between
Tony Horneman and Rocky Fortuna. (Tony's top and Rocky's bottom)

Our Men's A team.
Shaun Higgerson, Liam Kelly, Pat Jones and Matthew Lucas. The boys had a
magnificent ride with a sub hour 40 kilometre split. Suffered over
the second 40 though with only 3 riders but still cam eighth, missing
the bronze by 33 seconds)
Shaun Higgo gives the
team a pep talk. "I'll go on the front, and you guys try and stay
with me for 80 k's, ok!" That's the formula he used for winning
the Under 19's gold medal last year anyway.
Poor Paddy, he really
gave everything. Shaun's dad Peter said that Paddy was
unbelievable and that he used every drop of petrol. Peter reckons
that he was running on vapours over the last kilometre. Liam too
was sick and probably shouldn't even have rode but gave a fabulous
effort in spite of not being anywhere near 100%.
Here's the Master's A
Team. Chris White, Steve Horn, John Buckton and Mark Robertson.
The boys proudly display their "secret weapon". They missed the
Bronze medal, like the men's A, by 33 seconds. (3rd place to 8th place
was over a 33 second margin)
Here's the Men's B
team. From Left Scott Mcdonald, Clive Hammerson, Peter Mcdonald
and Aaron Castles. Unfortunately Scotty wasn't feeling 100% this
year and had to call it a day at the 40km mark. Scotty was very
much the engine in the 2002 team.
Here's the Men's C
team. From left Oliver Scott, Sean Bloch, Kevin Huang and James
Dalton. As Murphy's law would dictate, the only team who had no
spares vehicle. You guessed it, Sean gets a puncture and has to
wait 3 minutes for the team car to get to him. Kevin and James
went ahead and Oliver waited to help pull Sean back up to the other two.
Here's the
RBCC cheer squad waiting for the Men's teams to get the bell at the 40km
mark. You know how hard the bell lap is sometimes at Heffron?
Well imagine that you have just destroyed yourself over 40 kilometres
and the bell indicates that you are going around for a second lap.
We reckon
Rocky needs to get his hearing checked. There was that recent
incident which now sees Richie Jenkins in a plaster cast.
Something about not being able to differentiate between the words "Roll"
or "Hold". Now with everyone singing out, "Put it back on", he
appararently thought we were saying, "Show us a lat spread". Few
more 1000km weeks needed yet Rocky !!
Top and
bottom. Here's the Men's B team coming in for the turn at
the 40 kilometre (half way mark)
Here's our
Men's C team at the turn passing another team. Sean Bloch can be
seen chasing back up to Oliver Scott. This race was an easy
transition for Sean. Being a former world class track kilo rider,
it is nothing to add another 79 kilos and a few hills to the event.
Very easy transition for Sean.
Here's the Masters
teams at the Masters start at Sommersby, 22.5 kilometres west of Calga.
Dale Rockel was
chomping at the bit and dying to get away. Look at that grimace of
determination !
Here I am giving the
Masters C team some pointers.
Masters 2 team of Craig
Klement, Dave Macpherson, Alan Cohen settled into a good rhythm.
Frank & Rocky Fortuna were able to just keep up with them in Frank's
Cooper S mini.
Here's the whole
Masters 2 team from the start. Craig Klement leads out followed by
Dave Macpherson, Alan Cohen and Neil Morris at the rear.
The Masters 3 team with
Crispin Arnell managing a big cheesy grin whilst going up a climb.
One team up for you next time Crispin. Second wheel is Tony
Caruana with Mark Taylor at the rear and Mrs Taylor in the blue car
behind looking after the boys.
Here's the Master's 4
team blasting off. They looked so fast that we elected to put Tony
Aitchison behind them as driver in his 235 kilowatt Commodore.
Leading out is Dale. Big Paul "Ginger" Baker is to the left of
Dale with Mark Murdoch near the centre lines. Tony Horneman is
tucked in and obscured at the back.
Here's the Masters A
team having a little rest before the start. All the others have
gone and we have about 2 minutes to go. All smiles at this stage
but this condition was very short lived. I was the first casualty
just before the half way mark. Have never heard my heart rate alarm
before. Guess I will have to stick the max up about 5 beats.
Here's the Mens B team
rocketing in to the finish.
Here's a familiar face.
With his race over, Tony took over his role as club photographer
Obviously I am saying
something deep & meaningful.
Yeah, the Jenkins clan
were all smiles after the race.
Rocky Fortuna gave me a
few tips. John you have to scoff down the pies after a big effort
like that. It's protein to rebuild the muscles. Rocky told me that
I needed a minimum of 3 before I would get the effect.
Matty Lucas & Frank
Fortuna swap a joke at the Pie in the Sky. The vast majority of us
went back there after it was highly recommended by Rocky. Matty
was a little upset early. I let him the Buckton "Go fast" wheels
and he went out the back. Hope I haven't jinxed them.
