REPORT
Randwick Botany riders had the first round of the
Criterium championships in the morning and were a little concerned as
the first day of Autumn started off a little cooler than usual with
some intermittent showers. By the afternoon however, the sun had come
out and riders were greeted with a magnificent afternoon at Heffron
Park complete with the light breeze that they know and love so well.
A Grade pace was high. Just under 41kph average in
fact. Randwick Botany riders, Joe Sorby and Dave Jackson who have
just made the step up to A grade, found the pace relentless. Robbie
Cater and David Stewart were driving the bunch, each doing big turns.

Pictured left is
eventual race winner Paddy Jones driving out of the sharp left
hander and exiting the "squircle". Paddy loves this corner
and it is not unusual to see him on the front at this point. |

Stewart "Computer" Campbell
could be seen close to the front always ready to chase down any
breakaway. |

The final sprint was an
exciting one with only the width of a tyre separating Pat “Paddy”
Jones and Stewart “Computer” Campbell. Paddy, getting the judges
decision. |
B grade started out fast from the line courtesy of
Keegan Aitchison’s now weekly sprint from the start line. The pace
remained high and several riders were dropped early. Several attacks
were launched by Phil Gough of the North Sydney club. Phil went off
the front with 4 to go and had another attempt with 2 to go.
Unfortunately for Phil was able to reel him back in on both
occasions.

The race was won by Randwick
Botany rider, Mick Cohan with a fantastic sprint. Brendon Ingram
was tucked right into the slipstream on Mick’s wheel but couldn’t
quite come out to have a go at Mick. In the end it was Mick Cohan
first, Brendon Ingram second and a little bit back, Glen Irons
third. |
Mark Goodwin from the Sutherland club did lots of
work at the front of C grade and drove the C grade bunch. RBCC rider,
Shaun Ballesty also lifted the pace as he launched a couple of attacks
during the race.

Our resident female track
star, Janelle Lindsay, Greg Smart and a couple of other RBCC
riders (Dale Rockell and Richard Edmonds) could be seen planning
their race strategy (hiding) at the back of the bunch. However in
fairness, some of them were a little tired having competed in the
club criterium championships not that long before. |

Richie Jenkins could be seen
doing a bit of work on the front of D grade. Here's a
picture (left) of Ritchard driving the D grade bunch.
|
Mark Murdoch surprised the D grade bunch with
a big attack off the front on the bell lap. Although unsuccessful,
Mark took the sting out of some of the sprinters legs when, in an
effort to catch Mark, the bunch pace was lifted a little higher on the
last lap allowing no one to have much of a rest before the sprint.

In E grade, Kev Blanchfield
didn't have it all his way this week. Ross Fullerton
attacked and was able to get away and hold off Kev to take first
place. Congratulations Ross. Maybe next week, Kev. |

Randwick Botany welcomed a
group of Southern Cross Juniors to our racing program. The
juniors each had a one lap time trial and then an exciting 10
kilometre handicap. In a great ride Katrina Lane from Southern
Cross with Sam Buckland from Randwick Botany second and scratch
marker, Thomas Murdoch, third. |

David Jackson (our trainee photographer)
captured this lone rider (looking very stylish) in action. I
am unsure if he was off the front or out the back. I will leave it
to your imaginations. |
