Thirteen-year-old Randwick
Botany Cycling Club junior rider Tom Patton made it to the
podium in his second race in D-Grade at Heffron Park
Maroubra on Saturday 1 November 2003. Mixing it with
older junior and senior riders, Patton rode strongly
throughout the 20km event, and was pleased to be placed
third. |
He backed up the following day for
the annual 88km MS Society - Sydney to the Gong ride. About a
dozen Randwick Botany riders joined thousands of others for
the charity event with the aim to raise funds for the MS
Society. For the RBCC Gong action

A
contingent of Lidcombe Auburn Cycling Club members
registered to race in all grades Saturday, with several
being featured in the results, including Luis Trueba
(pictured right on Robbie Cater's wheel). |
|
.jpg) |
Luis just edged out Robbie "The Prince of Heffron" Cater
and finished second behind in-form Randwick Botany rider
Matthew Lucas. |
Could the Lidcombe Auburn
riders be checking out the circuit ahead of the
Centenary Race
Day and Dinner at Heffron Park on Saturday 15 November?
With $5,000 prizemoney on offer, there is good reason for a
‘reconnaissance’ race.

The chasing A Grade peleton with Karl Bellamy leading John
Mackensie from Michael Cohen. Karl, what are you
doing to those thighs? They are starting to
look pretty mean. |
|

Here's A Grade passing D grade, early in the race, with
RBCC's Peter Macdonald on the front. |
| |
|
|
.jpg) |
It was good to see Jeff "The Doc" Jones (2nd
wheel - green top) back at Heffron after having spent the
last 6 months in Europe for Cycling News dot com.
The Doc held the 1 lap record for Heffron for nearly 10
years before it was recently broken by Robbie "The Prince"
Cater with a scorching 2 min 43 seconds. |

Here's an interesting shot from action photographer Dave
Patton managing to capture nearly the entire B Grade field
on the one corner. |
| |
|
|

Team FRF looked ready for action on the start line.
Team Captain apparently sidelined star rider Alan Cohen
this week, replacing him with Paul Fortuna. Here's
the three Fortunas getting ready to mix it with B Grade. |
| |
|
|
.jpg) |
Here they are early in the race with Frank doing a little
work up the front. Paul and Rocky are staying in
contact with the the team captain who incidentally had a
fabulous ride on the first night of the Eastern
Suburbs Tues night summer series race at Heffron Park with
a sensational overall win. |
| |
|
|

It wasn't long though before big Roger Crawford got on the
front and turned the wick up. The pain is showing on
Rocky's face. I think we are going to have to get
Rocky a mouthguard if he keeps grinding those teeth
anymore. |
| |
|
|
.jpg) |
Even I (believe it or not), had a turn at the front.
Rocky is still hurting tucked in behind Craig Klement or
is that a look of pleasure Rocky? |
| |
|
|
.jpg) |
Now just in case you don't believe it, here I am again
shadowed by Andy Matthews with eventual winner, Sneaky
Pete Lynch on the inside and Frank Fortuna staying close
on the outside. |

|
Can you spot the difference in these
photos? |
In the end it was "Sneaky"
Pete Lynch who claimed victory in B Grade. Knowing
Sneaky's antics, Tony Horneman decided to take the podium
shots behind our sponsor's banner as we have in the past had
to sensor the odd shot that Pete was in but I won't go into
that. Anyway the banner was obviously not high enough
and Pete was once again able to fool Tony with his antics.

C Grade action and it's Sean O'Neill, recent new member of
RBCC leading club stalwart Tony Caruana. Sean and Tony
eventually came 2nd & third respectively. Perhaps
the quote of the weekend was Tony being overheard saying,
"I know how to suck a wheel" You will get no
arguments from anyone there Tony. |

Here's the E Grade field ready to go. From left, Joe
Gatt, Sandy Jeffrey and Ross Fullerton and that's the
order in which they finished. Good on you gang. |
The Junior Team Challenge over 10km
paired riders with the aim to work together and finish ahead
of the other teams. Nick Hall (Randwick Botany) / Matthew
Fortuna (St George) proved too strong for the other teams,
finishing in first place.
