REPORT

A large field of A Grade battled it out with 26 riders in the grade.  It came down to a fantastic sprint with Ben Isaksen narrowly edging out the King of Heffron, Anthony Spurgeon.  Simon Price was hot on the wheels for a well deserved third place.

Enjoy it while you can guys because the guy who came in fourth, RBCC Junior U19 rider, Robbie Cater is on a steep incline in terms of improvement and I'm sorry but I have to make yet another prediction.  (I'll have to call this race report Crystal Ball corner).  Next year, you guys will be looking at a lone rider about half a lap in the distance and you will turn  to each other asking the question, "Is that guy in our race".  The answer will most  definitely be yes.  Young Robbie will be in your race and the next thing that you will have to be worried about is whether he is going to lap you or not.

Well I predicted this victory in last weeks report.  The photos left shows last week's winner, Chris Guillan about to enter the final lap.  Little did Chris know that he had resident sprinter and this year's Club B grade champion,

Crispin Arnell right on his wheel, followed by fast improving Brendan Ingram in the blue booties behind Crispin and other resident sprinter, big Roger Crawford in fourth wheel.  Chris, I warned you not to get to used to winning B grade as you were a marked man.  I would have probably have pulled out  just out of plain fear if I knew I had these guys on my wheel on the final lap.

I was a little too far back to see it but I am informed that  Crispin, perhaps so sure that he had taken victory, started to throttle off, when hard charging Brendan Ingram nipped up the outside and stole victory.

Both Crispin and Brendan are fabulous sprinters and I expect lots more great duels between these guys who I think had their first ever sprint against each other in this race.  I spoke to big Roger, who can be seen in third wheel tucked in behind Crispin, afterwards and he told me that he reckons he can take the pair of them.  As for me, I guess I am going to just have to try the famous ride away manoeuvre again.  Unfortunately one needs to be extremely fit  for this trick to work.  I am also informed that after the race Chris Guillan could be heard saying "If only I had some bigger gears".  Well Chris Santa is bringing you a fantastic Christmas present, "The Big Ring !!"  Yes young Chris is U19 as of January 1.  One thing for sure is that there are going to be plenty of fireworks in coming B grade events, that's for sure.  We haven't even thrown our little pocket FRF rocket Frank Fortuna into the equation yet.  But for this week it was Randwick Botany, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th.

Didn't get a great deal of feedback from the C grade race other than perhaps winner, Andrew Riordan from Gunnedah might well have been a tad under graded.  I am informed that Andrew not only rode away from the C grade bunch but then passed A Grade at one point in the race.  Andrew I don't want to put words in the handicapper's mouths but I feel yet another prediction coming on.  I think when next you  race at Heffron Park, you might very well hear the words, "Congratulations Andrew and welcome to B grade", at the sign in table.

Well D grade was very much a cross generation affair.  First we had young Randwick Botany U15 flyer, Tom Patton, second was Carlo Ghisolfi who represented Italy in the 1956 Olympics (I'll let you try and guess his age) and then RBCC member Craig Pager (twenty something).  A concern was raised with me recently that these U15 riders might be disadvantaged by their gearing restrictions.  Doesn't seem to be bothering young Tom too much.  Neither does it seem to be bothering our other U15 rider, Luke Davison who placed in C Grade last week.  Luke was absent this week.

In E grade, Joe Gatt continues to dominate however the E grade fields are getting bigger and the E grade riders continue to improve.  Joe you have plenty of competition coming your way in the near future as our girls Julia and Sandie continue to improve.

Well that's it from Crystal Ball Corner this week.  Stay tuned for more predictions next week and if you happen to read this report on Sunday afternoon, don't forget to tune in to SBS for Cycling Central with Mike Tomalaris at 5.30pm.  Mike is going to be showing footage from perhaps the premium cycling event of the season, the Tour de Jamberoo.  Don't miss it !!
