REPORT
About 75 senior riders and about 10 junior riders turned up for what
was a great days racing. There was some anxious moments in the
northbound straight of the "Squircle" about half way through the race
when B grade caught D grade and proceeded to pass them on the right
hand side. B grade were screaming out "keep left" to the D
graders who were all complying with that request when all of a sudden
we heard, "B grade keep left" and A grade proceeded to pass B grade at
a fair rate of knots. I cannot remember three grades across the
track in one location and at one time before, however everyone did the
right thing and gave each respective faster grade room to pass.
It got a little scary on the exit of the Squircle as we cornered right
alongside the tennis courts as the bunches were still 3 wide through
that corner with A grade going really fast through the apex, B grade
using the middle of the corner and D grade staying out wide to the
left near the grass. Thankfully the grades passed each other
without incident. Congratulations to all those riders involved.
I had a bit of a dig at the flying Fortuna brothers that I never see
them in their FRF gear. Well Frank turned up this week looking
resplendent in his red white and blue gear (good colour scheme-
familiar somehow), and
then proceeded to win the B grade race. Maybe I will shut my
mouth from now on. There's Frank (pictured left) flanked by a
couple of Randwick Botany man mountains, Oliver Scott and Roger
Crawford who came second and third. Frank told me after the race
that his gears had played up and he had dropped into the 53/11 in the
middle of his sprint. God help us if they ever make a ten rear
cog!! I also have to make comment
on our Communcations Officer, Tony Horneman's comment left (Tony
supplies the results and I cut and paste them into the web page).
I should tell you that our handicappers take into account the first 3
place getters of each race and points are assigned ultimately
upgrading that rider to the next highest grade when they have accrued
sufficient points. I think Tony is trying to suggest that I
might be purposely coming fourth in order to elude the handicap system
and to ensure that I do not accrue points towards A grade.
Nothing could be further from the truth Tony !! By the way
someone has to take the podium shots when you don't attend racing.
I can hardly take a photo of myself.
I was very impressed with Randwick Botany member Kevin Huang.
Kevin had his first ride in B grade and hung in there nicely right to
the sprint. Kevin looked very smooth and comfortable.
Congratulations Kevin on a top ride. It is really great to
see the big fields of A & B graders. It was only a couple of
years ago that we were getting only a handful of A's & B's and then
having to combine them for sufficient numbers to race. There is
a real apparent and obvious trend, in terms of improvement, throughout
the grades and many RBCC riders are improving and moving up to race in
the higher grades. To these riders I say congratulations and
keep up the good work. It is obviously paying off and this is
reflected in the good results that we have been achieving in the opens
this year.
Well as usual, the D graders and E graders took off before I could
snap their photographs. So congratulations to Mark Burgess from
Waratah Vets and Norman Jew from Randwick Botany, who both stuck
around to provide a big smile for the camera.
See you all again next week.
