There was no junior
racing today as we were very fortunate to have Ron Bonham,
National Coaching Director from Cycling Australia, who spoke to
juniors and their parents on various cycling issues, including
diet, training, physiology, & cycling skills to name but a few of
the topics discussed. It was a most entertaining and
enlightening talk and all of those present enjoyed it immensely.
I'm sure that the vast majority of those present came away a lot
more knowledgeable than they were prior to Ron's talk. Thank
you to our Junior Support Coordinator, Janette Murdoch for
organising Ron's attendance and a huge thank you to Ron for
sharing his wealth of cycling knowledge. It was absolutely
fantastic.

A Grade split up very early with Simon Price,
John Kenny and Aaron Castles getting away in a three man break.
They were followed by a second three man break of Pat Jones, David
McHugh and Tim Rice. The front three breakaway worked well
together right up till the bell lap when Simon and John turned up
the wick and put a gap on Aaron who was unable to go with them. |
The final sprint was between John and Simon with Simon Price
claiming victory. Randwick Botany's Aaron Castles rolled
in for a well deserved third place. Tim Rice from the
Sydney club had a fantastic ride working well for most of the
race with Pat Jones in the second bunch. Tim only faded
towards the later end of the race.

In a fabulous demonstration of form in the B
Grade race, Randwick Botany's Peter Macdonald rode away from
the B grade peleton (pictured left) in the howling windy
conditions and not only stayed away but steadily built on his
lead. Peter was going so hard in fact that he began closing
on the leading three man A grade breakaway. Peter came home
hard without any noticeable drop in cadence and finished a good
half a lap ahead of the B Grade peleton having been out by himself
for some 10 laps. The handicappers took note of not only
Peter's performance but some obvious "throttle offs" by a couple
of riders in the sprint who are obviously not eager to place and
gain promotion points towards A grade. WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE
!! |

In a rare show of form, Dale Rockell spent a lot of time at
the front of C grade and was actually off the front on a couple of
occasions. If anyone is wondering why I am not listed in the
4th placing in B grade it's because I'm still a little sore from a
fall which saw my beloved Moser laid to rest. I was telling
the story to Dale and telling him how unsafe it was to be a "wheel
suck" as I always seem to be taken out by someone going down in
front of me. Was it just coincidence that Dale suddenly went
to the front and stayed there for most of the race ? |

There was plenty of action in D Grade.
The pace was high and there was some notable retirements going out
the back in the windy conditions. Left Mark Murdoch drives
the bunch. Tony Aitchison, who is never far from the front,
was able to come home third in a very close sprint finish. |

Three E graders slipped away early and were
able to work together. Kevin Malcolm, Norman Zadek and
Norman Jew shared the workload to stay away from the chasing
peleton. Norman Zadik, who placed second behind Malcoml, has been a regular since we held a round of the
Waratah Veterans at Heffron several weeks ago. It was at that time that he had a very
close and exciting race with RBCC's Julia Guinan who turned around
and invited the Veteran riders back to Heffron. It's been
weeks now Julia. Where are you ??? |
