REPORT
What an unusual day at
Heffron Park. There was hardly any wind and the day's racing was
conducted under beautiful blue skies on a day which could only be
described as glorious.

Here
are some of the riders enjoying the sunshine after racing, in the
Murdoch outside sun lounge. Unfortunately, the day was so
nice that many of the riders simply rode off after racing to enjoy
the rest of the afternoon on their bike leaving Tony pretty hard
pressed to get his famous podium photographs. (click on photos to

A
Grade results are as per left. Jerzy had a fantastic sprint to
just hold off the fast finishing Matt Lucas with Stewart "Computer"
Campbell rocketing in for third place.
There was a bit of controversy in B Grade which left the Commissarie's
scrambling for the rule book. Michael Murdoch got away in a
three man break-away with Gary Libro from Sutherland and Simon Davies
from the Central Coast. The three worked well together and
established a break that the peleton was never going to bridge.
However, some ten laps from the finish, Michael pulled over due to a
mechanical fault. He fixed the fault and took his lap out.
However when the Principal Commissaire enquired as to the nature of
the mechanical mishap, she found out that his rear skewer had come
loose and that the tyre was rubbing on the chain stay of the
frame. Michael had had his lap out and had resumed his position
in the race, eventually crossing the line first. However, and
this is a trap for young players, he was not entitled to a lap out by
the rules. The rules allow a rider to have a lap out, in certain
circumstances, providing that that the stop is to rectify a "recognised
mishap".
A
recognised mishap as described in the Technical Regulations of Cycling
Australia is as follows:
"
A recognised mishap shall include a puncture, a fall, breaking of a
frame and/or any of it's accessories but it shall not include
insufficient tightening of a wheel, a chain, handlebars, saddle, toe
straps or any other accessory. The Chief Commissaire will decide
what constitutes a recognised mishap."
So
Michael's mechanical mishap was due to insufficient tightening of his
back wheel and therefore he was not entitled to a lap out. The
proper course of events would require that Michael would have to fix
his wheel and chase back on. As it turned out Michael was
therefore 1 lap down at the finish and did not therefore place in the
race.
It
is also important to note that you must notify the Commissaire before
taking your lap out and advise/request/inform the Commissaire on what
basis you are requesting a lap out. It is the Commissaire's call
as to whether you warrant a lap out or not and it is not the situation
that the Commissaires go looking for you to ask you what happened.
Having said all that, it was a fantastic ride by "Big Bird" and it is
worthy of all of us committing the above rule to memory. If any
consolation Michael, you did get your picture taken. Mick is
centre in the B grade photo. Michael like a true sport has
copped it on the chin. Hope he takes my grading him to A grade
next week, as well.
After all that, the rest of the grades were pretty ho hum with Dominic
taking out C grade (again) and Chris Federspiel taking out D Grade.
In
a fast and furious sprint Ross Fullerton narrowly beat Kev Blanchfield
in the E Grade race.
