Above Laurant & Jack
Vignes pictured with Jack's little sister, but it was Jack Vignes who
was the star of the Vignes family this day. Yes Laurie rode well
and got a third in A grade but Jack was the star with a SECOND place
in the U9/U11 handicap which is Jack's first ever open. Great
work Jack !!! |
| |
|
 |
|
Above Jack shows the
champion style whilst Taylor Weetman in the background also looks
extremely good in the prestigious U9/11 handicap. We know that
Jack came second. Congratulations to Taylor on a fabulous third
placing behind Jack. |
| |
|
 |
| These two are such a class act. Randwick Botany's U17
riders, left Luke Davison and right Tom Patton. They both rode
away from peloton and eventually sprinted it out for 1st and second
place with Luke being just that little bit quicker at the moment.
Absolutely fabulous work guys !! |
| |
|
 |
| Above the U15 sprint with Illawarra's Scott Law just too strong.
Aaron Bicknell had a great ride to finish third. So too did Emma
Jones who was first U15 woman. A very impressive ride by Tim
Duncan in what was his first ever Open meeting. Keep up the good
work Tim. Excellent ride. |

THANK YOU:
|
The
Snowy Wilson Memorial Open was a fantastic event and, by all
accounts, enjoyed by all who attended. The day would
not have been so successful nor even possible had it not been for
the 40 plus people who gave selflessly of their time and worked to
make the event such a huge success. Thanks to all those who
gave of their time to assist.
-- John Buckton
President RBCC
We would also like to
thank our sponsors without whom the day would not have been
possible.
Newington Inn, Petersham, FRF Couriers, Blue Steel Sports, DS Labels Marrickville, Powerbar,
Chirosports and Cheeky Monkey. |

 |
Special thanks to stand
out workers, Chief Commissaire Ken Martin. Assistant
Commissaires Joanne Buckton and Arthur Donnelly. Helen Vella for
doing an enormous amount of lead up time on the program and
myriad of other arrangements that needed to be in place prior to
the event. Ritchard Jenkins for being our Human
Resources Manager. |
 |
| |
|
|
 |
Thanks to
our "team" of Ambos from St John. Lately it has
been very hard to get an Ambulance Officer because of
an apparent dwindling in the numbers, however at the
Snowy Wilson we would have been able to cope with an
air disaster or terrorist attack. Thanks team !
To top it all off, David "The General" (far left) won
the raffle. Congratulations General. |
|
Thanks also to Guy Bicknell who assisted me with the rollout
of all the junior riders. Rocky Fortuna who was fabulous on the BBQ and
cooked up the bacon, eggs and sausages for most of the day. Janette
Murdoch, Allison Cater, Maria Jenkins and Liz Patton for spending
nearly the entire day in the registration tent. Freddy Vella
who worked manned the canteen for the entire day.
Chris White as Commissaire and also assisting with all the
presentations. Both Chris White and Janelle Lindsay who
both did a fabulous job as commentators on the PA
system all day. They both kept the crowd up to speed with all
the action and acknowledged all the sponsors who helped us put on
the event. Tom Skullander CEO of Cycling NSW, who assisted as
video ref with Cycling NSW's video equipment and also assisted
with the presentation of the Cycling NSW trophy being the
major award on the day
REPORT

The race is dedicated to the
memory of Alfred C "Snowy" Wilson who joined the Randwick Botany
Cycling Club in 1917. Snowy was a member of the club for over 30
years and served as Club Secretary for 26 years. Snowy's daughter
Phyllis Gilbert lives in Sydney and is very proud to see her
father remembered this way each year. |

|
Over 150 riders registered for the Snowy Wilson Memorial Criterium
cycling event at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Saturday 6 November
2004. The 9-race program was conducted on the tight 2km closed
road circuit in excellent weather conditions.

The premier A-Grade race saw
four riders breakaway at the midway point. The foursome
comprising David Treacy, Luis Trueba, Laurent Vignes and Patrick
Naughton, worked together to keep the chasing bunch at bay.
Stuart Dangerfield (Great Britain), Anthony Spurgeon and Jeff
Jones (cyclingnews.com) all tried hard to bridge the gap without
success. The breakaway rolled home about a kilometre ahead of the
rest. Matthew Lucas and Laurent Vignes won the two sprint Primes. |
|
 |
There were five away for quite a while
with Matt Lucas working well in the break. Matt felt
himself failing and knew he was not going to be able to
maintain the pace of the lead group, so he summoned all his
strength and took out the first Prime. He then
gracefully went off the back of the lead bunch and took up a
position in the chasing peloton |
| |
|
|
 |
Randwick Botany still had one in the
break. Pat Naughton. Unlike the several phone calls I
received prior to the race with riders requesting to be put
down a grade, Pat rang me up and asked to be put up in A
grade. It was good to see 2 "Vets" get up into the
placings in A grade and take the prize money. Great work
by all 4 riders but special note to both Laurant and Pat, who
took 3rd & 4th place respectively. |
| |
|
|
 |
The chasing Peloton with Chris "Willy"
Young and Jeff "The Doc" Jones leading the bunch. Both
riders have been in Europe for the past 6 months. Willy
racing and Jeff as European correspondent for CyclingNews dot
com. Chris went on to win the Peloton sprint for 4th
place. Jeff looked resplendent in his "retro" Randwick Botany
gear. |
| |
|
|
 |
Randwick Botany's Saxon John's had a great
race and looks very fit at the moment. Saxon rode off
the front of the Peloton and was looking fantastic and then I
heard the Commissaire's say 50 minutes to go. opps............

 |
Here's our happy group of Randwick Botany
A graders on the line all set to go. From Left Matty
Lucas who was away with the lead group for a few laps and took
out one of the Primes. Middle is Jerzy Sowa who is
sprinting like a rocket at the moment and on the right is "The
Doc" complete with retro RBCC uniform spoken about above.
Good on you boys. |
| |
|
|
 |
B/C Handicap action left with RBCC's Aaron
Castles driving the peloton. Behind him is ex RBCC
member Keegan Aitchison now riding for Southern Cross and in
3rd wheel is Heffron Park stalwart Tony Ianicito. |
| |
|
|
 |
If there is a man with plenty of power,
speed and endurance at the moment, it is Kev Black.
Kevin took out the B/C handicap. Kevin is seen left sprinting
home to victory narrowly edging out RBCC rider Pat "Paddy"
Jones with Jim Moore of the Central Coast Club coming in
third. Good one Kev! |
| |
|
|
 |
If you thought the B/C handicap was fast,
you should have been in the D/E. D/E averaged 39.6kph.
I thought we had a fair chance in the "Chopping block" 30
second group as there was the "odd" Randwick Botany member in
our bunch as the start line shows. The other fact that I
thought was in our favour was that most of us train together
and know each others strengths and idiosyncrasies. The other
really good thing was that they all knew that I like to man
the back of the peloton and report on whether the scratchies
are coming. So they were happy to leave me there doing
that most important job and not calling me through for a turn.
Good on you boys. |
| |
|
|
 |
Talking about scratchies, they were doing
it Extremely hard trying to get across to the chopping block
bunch. Left Dean "Deano" Preddy tries to do it by
himself. Reckon you might have done better swapping off
turns then wasting energy on a solo Deano. That's just
my thoughts anyway. |
| |
|
|
 |
Here's the 1 minute bunch with Chopping
block looming in the background. Although Rocky Fortuna
was the only one working and dragged them around lap after lap
(well that's the story Rocky tells me), we caught them anyway.
However most of them jumped on to the back of us. We
then had a huge bunch and set out in pursuit of the lone
leader Joe Gatt who had rode away from his "Limit" bunch. |
| |
|
|
 |
Ok Rock Star, only kidding. I found
this photographic evidence of you on the front. Don't forget
the shutter speed of a camera is in milliseconds, so it still
does not prove how LONG you were on the front. Then
again I note Smarty and only a few riders behind you, you
could be sucking someone's wheel out of picture for all I
know. |
| |
|
|
 |
A valiant effort but big Joe was swallowed
up a couple of laps later. Congratulations to Joe
however in being awarded the first unplaced E Grader. |
| |
|
|
 |
Left Argon 18 power, as Steve Foster turns
up the wick in the D/E handicap and a gap starts to form back
to Frank Fortuna on the front of the peloton. |
| |
|
|
 |
Over to the action packed Penny Farthing
race and left Paddy Jones looks like his head is touching the
sky he is up so high. It's a long way to fall if you
come off one of these machines. Congratulations to Pat Jones
who had a great race meeting with a second in the B/C handicap
and a second in the Penny Farthing 4km race. I
know these thing are supposed to be ancient and all but boy I
reckon that looks like a HUGE Australian Velocity brand
aluminium rim on Paddy's Penny Farthing. Could be wrong,
what do you think? Click on image for full size view. |

Well after the event of the day, the D/E
handicap, we all happily pose for the camera after getting
Chris "Brutus" Reynolds across the line for victory. I
was going to lead him out but I could see that Frank Fortuna
was doing an excellent job so I backed off.
Congratulations to Tom Murdoch (not pictured) who had an
excellent ride and came in fourth. Well it didn't have
the prize money or the hype of the A grade event but it was
action packed from start to finish. D/E is the place to
be!! |
Randwick Botany Cycling Club
riders filled most placed in the D/E Handicap over 20km. Big
Chris Reynolds stormed home for the win followed by Crispin Arnall,
John Revezi (Sydney) and young Thomas Murdoch.
|
 |
Several top A-Grade women lined
up in the Women’s Handicap race including track star Rochelle
Gilmore and Kate Nichols. Skye-Lee Armstrong was the strongest on
the day, with Kate Nichols second and Kate Charge third. The
first unplaced Masters Woman was Caroline Smale and the first
unplaced U17 Woman was Deena-maree Faulkner. Left a few of the
girls pose with Nick Woods in front of race sponsor
Chirosports banner. From left Kat Nicholls, Chrisie
Rhiakos, Nick Woods and Rochelle Gilmore. |
One of the highlights of the race program was a historic Penny-farthing
race. Alan Sumner from the Dulwich Hill club kindly arranged the
Penny-farthing bicycles for the 4km race. It was a marvelous
sight to see the Penny-farthings going along the tight Heffron
Park circuit on their solid rubber tyres and no brakes! Many of
the junior riders were scratching their heads in amazement as they
watched from the sidelines. Simon Llewellyn was the quickest,
with Patrick Jones second, Megan Webb third and George Pappas
fourth.
Luke Davison won the U17 race
and Tom Patton second. Brodie Talbot and Laurence Van Schie filled
the other places.
