Sydney Junior Road Championships, Waratah Park, by Tamás Bykerk

The NSW Junior Metropolitan Road Championships were held at Waratah Park Sutherland on Saturday 19 June 2004.  Four Randwick Botany juniors: Adriano Maradini, Luke Davison, Tamás Bykerk and Tom Patton went to what would be a great day of racing at the southern cross junior open. Adriano had two races early in the day and had good finishes, both of which he contested the sprint. In one race he came down because a kid clipped wheels in front of him and had nowhere to go, but still managed a bunch finish.

Tamás was graded into the U/15B's because he hadn't raced this year so far and he was warming up in the marshalling area waiting to be rolled out and it didn't happen and then he missed his race. So he ended up racing A grade with Tom and Luke.

The race was held on circuit 2 short and fast. This was a very good race with lots of attacks coming from the Canberra rider Matt miesel-dennis, all of which were chased down. It was down to a bunch sprint, Tamás got on the front on the last lap to give the leadout to tom who was 2nd wheel. Tom started the sprint near the top of the hill and everyone reacted quickly, Luke was a fair way back but managed to come through the field and take 1st place, Tom was 4th and Tamás didn't contest the sprint.

Later in the day was the endurance section, this was held over the longer and hillier circuit. This time Tamás raced B grade and from the gun he was on a solo breakaway for the whole race and won by about 1-2mins.

In the A grade race Tom Patton was on the attack after the first lap with matt miesel-dennis and opened up a gap of around 10 seconds but was caught within the next lap. The Peleton reduced in size by about half because of the hills. Tom Patton came 4th and Luke wasn't contesting after he began to feel it after his great race in the morning. This was a great day of racing and we are all looking forward to the Canberra tour next week
