Sat 10 January saw a big days racing at Heffron Park with just
under 100 riders competing over the 5 grades.

Left, not an unusual sight as Robbie drives the A
Grade bunch. Randwick
Botany Cycling Club member Michael Cowan made the A-Grade
podium for the first time in his cycling career.
Brendan Ingram, who has also just moved up to A, also put
in a good showing. |
In the end it was the King of
Heffron Park – Anthony Spurgeon who took first finished first
with Randwick Botany's Jersy Sowa second, and Michael Cowan
third. Cyclingnews.com editor Jeff Jones attacked on several
occasions but Robert Cater kept bridging the gap. The
20-rider A-Grade bunch set a high average speed of 40.5kmh,
with most 2km laps completed in less than 3 minutes.

It was a huge B grade field. The photo left
makes it look even bigger, but is in fact B grade passing
one of the slower grades. Andy Matthews looks pretty happy
out front. Rocky Fortuna
and Craig Klement did a lot of work in B-Grade. Club
President John Buckton was seen in at least one
breakaway. |
Fresh from the Eastern Suburbs
Cycling Club training camp at Jindabyne, David Jackson (Randwick
Botany) scored a powerful win. Dave, who rode A Grade
for most of 2003, must have been coached by the expert whilst
away on the camp. Just like his mentor, Darth Concey, he
managed to convince the girls on the registration desk that he
was not the rider he used to be and should ride B Grade.
He then sucked wheel all race and only emerged at the end of
the race, coming off someone's wheel to contest the sprint for
an easy victory.
Talking about Jindabyne high
altitude training camps, RBCC's is on soon,

In another, what could only be
described as, disgraceful episode, Craig Klement, pictured in
the podium shot left, claimed 3rd place and set about
convincing everyone that he had most definitely placed third
in the race. As coincidence would have it, and in
perhaps the best ever finish photo that our club camera has
taken, the truth was unveiled. We noticed that the
lenses in Craig's glasses were a red colour and have concluded
that he must be perceiving the world through rose coloured
glasses. To be doubly sure though, the club has made an
Optometrist appointment for
him. This is the REAL order of finishing:

Final REAL placing, Dave Jackson
just beating Christopher Guillan (Southern Cross), Frank
Fortuna third and Dan O’Callaghan (Sydney), fourth.
I sent a copy of this photo to
Craig and he returned the following email to myself and Frank
Fortuna,
" I hereby publicly and
wholeheartedly concede that the third place finish bestowed
upon thyself was completely misplaced and incorrectly
applied. Must have been the "red mist" blocking my vision!!!
Sorry fellas."
He
then went on to say that he owed Frank Fortuna a coffee.
Well your club mates are not going to stand for that.
You grabbed that 3rd place purse and we expect nothing less
than money on the Cafe bar and coffees for everyone
on next training ride.

Just when one thought
disgraceful episodes were over,
1993 B grader, Scott Rice (Randwick Botany), pictured in
first wheel left, convinced the handicappers to show mercy
and allow him to ride C Grade. In an all too
familiar excuse, he convinced the girls that B grade would
be far too tough for him as "he hadn't been on the bike
much". |
He then went out and won C grade.
On behalf of my fellow handicappers I would like to say,
Congratulations and welcome back to B Grade Scotty!

Left, the C grade sprint. Scott Rice first,
with Tony Caruana (Randwick Botany) second and Jonathon
Hogard (Randwick Botany) third. |

I'm not sure if D Grade was a race or a social event.
Left they all seem pretty happy with time to smile for the
camera. Placings in D-Grade
were Gus Silva (Lidcombe Auburn), David Macefield
(Macarthur) and Grant Chellew (Sydney). |

Bit of drama in the E Grade race with our own Sandie
Jeffery having a fall.
Sandie remounted and continued racing but was forced
to retire early however, due to a bent STI lever. In the
end it was new RBCC member, Joe Gatt on his brand new
carbon Giant with 10 speed Dura-Ace componenty, first,
followed by: |
|
John Siounis (Waratah Veterans) Ross Fullerton (Randwick
Botany) and Kevin Blanchfield (Randwick Botany). |

Sandie wasn't going to let a few grazes upset her and
was in good spirits after the race. Not letting her
first fall get to her, we saw Sandie out riding with Dave
Mackey Sunday morning on the club Waterfall training ride.
Good on you Sandie and hope the grazes heal up quickly. |

Janette Murdoch cut a fine figure on the sideline.
Now Janette, if you are going to waive and smile to all
the riders, can you refrain from wearing the high leg
split numbers. It's very distracting. |

Left, Rocky holds up his beautiful daughter Rebecca.
Lucky for her she takes very much after Anna's side.
However, there is one very noticable likeness.
