JUNIORS

It was Skills week, this week for the Juniors and our thanks goes to Pat Jones, Aaron Castles and Clive Hammerson who took the juniors through the various skills.

Above "Paddy" demonstrates to the kids how to turn tightly around a witches hat.

Matty Fortuna has a go.

Above Clive Hammerson teaches the girls how to stop quickly in a straight line.  They had to come to a halt as quickly as they could between the 2 witches hats.

THANK YOU:

Thanks to our Commissaires, Joanne Buckton & Richard Jenkins.  Thanks to our safety marshals, including Aaron Castles.  Thanks to  Ritchard Jenkins  for deploying and retrieving all the safety equipment. Thanks to Anna Fortuna who manned the canteen.   Thanks to RJ from the St John Ambulance.

REPORT

Randwick Botany member Jersy Sowa celebrated his 32nd birthday with a win in the 36km A-Grade race at Heffron Park on Valentines Day, Saturday 14 February 2004.

In a very close sprint, Team FRF rider Chris Jenkins was second followed by strongmen John Kenny and Patrick Jones.

Richard Makin (North Sydney) and Andrew Riordan (Gunnedah) broke away in the 32km B-Grade event with 4 laps to go.

The pair sprinted it out for first and second place respectively, more than 400m in front of the chasing group.

Third home was Nicholas Rathbone (Eastern Suburbs) followed by Kevin Black (Sydney), Grant Patrick (Southern Cross), Julian Robert-Shaw, David Huang (St George) and Clive Hammerson.

Laura Bortolozzi (Team FRF Couriers) drove the C-Grade bunch for most of their 28km race, breaking away early in the event.

One third of the bunch was dropped by the final laps, with Arthur Driver setting the pace in the latter stages.

Final placings were Andy Portess (UK), Greg Haydon (Parramatta), Richard Westmoreland and Arthur Driver (Penrith Panthers).

Andrew Swan won the D-Grade 20km race, with Adam Bradstreet second, Janelle Lindsay third and Andrew Morehouse fourth. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of the D Grade action as they had finished just prior to me going out the back of B grade and picking up the camera.  However, the winner, Andrew Swan has given us a first hand account as follows:

"D graders must be a romantic lot, because numbers were sub-20 today, after being 30+ a week or so ago. After being exhorted by the    starters to "look after" each other (was this also a Valentine's Day thing?), we rolled out as a group without any ill-advised start-line breakaways (ahem). A couple of laps in, a guy in a red jersey (sorry I don't know everyone's names) tried to go clear, but without support he came back to us after a km or two. With any further thoughts of breakaways having been killed off by the stiff easterly, the bunch stayed together at a fairly relaxed pace. Even so, we were catching C grade at one point - I guess they too felt no need tokeep the pace high.

With about three of our 10 laps to go, another more serious break was attempted, and a few of us jumped in pursuit. I didn't look around, but I could imagine our usually tight-knit D grade stringing out into single file as the pace picked up. Two laps to go now, and the hard-working chasers were just reeling in the escaper - perfect time for another attack! I jumped down the right from about fourth wheel, but the tailwind gave me a bit too much speed going into the squircle and I ran wide into the grass - luckily I managed to stay upright and ease my way back onto the concrete, glad to be an Armstrong rather than a Beloki. Worried that my grassy excursion had cost me my lead, I dug deep, knowing I still had two upwind trips over the pimples to come. I barely heard the bell over my own rasping breath, then counted off the seconds until it rang again for the bunch - I'm still clear! The pimples felt like sand dunes as I laboured over them for the final time... now the final U-turn at the top of the course ... now into the finish straight and hope like hell the bunch isn't gaining too fast ... finally, there's the blessed line and a chance to suck in some huge lungfuls of air.

Second place went to the hard-working Adam Bradstreet, improving on his 3rd the week before and 4th the week before that. Third was Janelle Lindsay, whom I saw once before the start and once for the photo afterwards! She obviously rode a canny race."

Thanks Andrew for that report.  Now that you have seen Janelle Lindsay, I can tell you from first hand experience that in the very near future you will be seeing a lot more of her.  Unfortunately for you however the view will be very much looking at the back of her.

Junior rider Matthew Fortuna had a go in E-Grade and rode strongly.  The race was won by Tom Nolan followed by Grant Roe, Carlos Serafin (Waratah Veterans), Stephen Patrick (Southern Cross), who’s son placed fifth in B-Grade, and Joe Gatt.

Sam Buckland, Emma James, Matthew Fortuna, Matthew Weetman and Tom Patton and others participated in junior cycling skills training today, assisted by senior riders Patrick Jones, Aaron Castles and Clive Hammerson.  The training was organized by Junior Support Co-ordinator Janette Murdoch.

The boys try out the slalem course.  Opps, one witches hat is over.

Emma Jones shows the boys how it is done.  Good work Emma.
