REPORT

Racing returned to Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW, after the Easter break with over 75 riders registering.  New start times were introduced with D and E Grade starting at 2pm and A, B and C Grades at 3pm.

The King of Heffron Park – Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) powered home to win the 36km A-Grade race followed by Matthew Lucas, Josh Marden and David Rae (Eastern Suburbs).

Initially, there were only 3 away in the break before David Rae came across.  Left, The King attacks over the first pimple but there is no way Matty Lucas was going to let him go as he snarls and accelerates hard to get back on the wheel of Spurge.

Richard Scriven (Sydney) and Chris Reynolds broke away near the start/finish line in the final lap of B-Grade but even in spite of his high altitude training at Jindabyne over Easter, Chris was unable to hold Scriven's wheel and had to let him go as they exited the squircle near the tennis courts.  Chris was gobbled up by the chasing peleton however Scriven was able to maintain his lead taking the win by 100m.  Second place went to Andy Matthews followed by Karl Bellemy.

Andy Matthews smiles as he takes the peleton sprint and second place in B grade.  Sorry Richard, I missed your solo finish.  I was already to take the shot when I looked up to see what the Commissaires were screaming about.  Let's keep that our little secret.

I noticed Andy Matthews on the front of the B grade bunch a few times.  Co-incidentally though, it seemed to be only when he passed the camera location and I also noticed on such occasions that he always had a smile on his face. I don't think that there is any truth to those vicious rumours such as "He wouldn't do a turn if you stuck him in a tumble dryer"

Karl Bellamy tested the B Grade bunch a few times by riding off the front.  Left Karl away with the an A grade chasing bunch looming up on him and the B grade peleton in the background.

Alan Cohen did a fair bit of work on the front of C grade.  Andrew Swan was also often at the front of the C grade bunch.  Tony Caruana was looking very stylish in his Elvis style glasses.  Good to see Andrew Grant having a run around Heffron.  They do let him out of the Cycling NSW office.  andrew is in the yellow jersey.

Also seen up the front driving the C grade bunch was Andrew Swan (First wheel, pictured left). Laura Bortolozzi (Team FRF Couriers), seen in 2nd wheel behind Andrew, rode strongly as always in the 26-rider 28km C-Grade event.

In the end though it was Adam Bradstreet who was mid-field at the start of the straight in the last lap and feared being blocked in.  In a demonstration of blinding acceleration, Adam went from 40kmh to 60kmh to blast through the bunch to win in a time of 45min 38sec.  Minor placings went to Simon Vagg (Sydney) and Craig Blundell (Sydney).

Paul Dimitriou broke away in the 20km D-Grade race with 4 laps to go and didn’t look back, easily winning in a time of 33min 59sec.  Simon Visor was second followed by Rachel O’Connell (Manly Warringah).

Mark Murdoch rode strongly in D Grade and spent a fair bit of time on the front of the D Grade peleton, driving the D grade bunch along.

E grade action left with RBCC's Joe Gatt out in the front with fellow club members Grant Roe and James Young not letting him get too far away. That is co-incidentally the order in which they eventually finished.

Junior racing results was a family affair with the Weetmans taking the first three placings in the 8km Handicap race.  First was Taylor Weetman followed by Andrew Weetman, Matthew Weetman and Adriano Maradini.
