Left, 2000 Olympian Paul Rowney, leads
the King of Heffron, Anthony Spurgeon with RBCC workhorse
Peter McDonald tucked in closely behind. |
Demonstrating his return to form,
the King-of-Heffron-Park, Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) stormed
home to win the 36km A-Grade race at Heffron Park on Saturday
17 January 2004, in a cracking average speed of over 41kmh.
Simon Price (Eastern Suburbs) finished a bike length behind in
second place and John Kenny (Eastern Suburbs) third.

As usual, our resident A Grade
powerhouse, Peter McDonald, did lots of work at the front
driving the A Grade bunch along. Heaven help them if
a hill ever appears in the middle of Heffron Park.
Peter is coming away on the RBCC High altitude training
camp next week and will be able to test himself |

against our other climbers including
Robbie Cater and Shaun "Higgo" Higgerson. Higgo
(left) came down for a visit on Saturday. Shaun is
coming down with me (JB) to meet up with the 30 RBCC
riders doing the high altitude training camp at Jindabyne. I was
looking at Higgo with his red streaked hair and the nail
though his eyebrow and thinking about what music I am
going to load the CD stacker up with for the 5 and a half
hour drive. Hope Higgo likes Frank Sinatra. |
I guess most people know by now,
but Higgo is off to Europe next month as a member of the
Credit Agricole U23 team. We are really happy for him
and wish him our best. Anyone who has ever raced against
him knows the huge engine that Higgo has when it is in fine
tune.
A very fast B-Grade bunch split up
into smaller groups early in their 32km race, with several
dropping out, due to the brisk average speed of 39.5kmh.
Christopher Guillan (Southern Cross) who had his first outing
on his Under 19 gearing, finished first, followed by David
Evans (Eastern Suburbs), Andrew Riordan (Gunnedah) and Clive
Hammerson (Randwick Botany). Unfortunately Club President
John Buckton, as well as a cast of others, retired mid-way
through the race.
Club Vice-President Tony Horneman
punchured at the back of the circuit during the first lap of
the 28km C-Grade race, and had to endure the long walk back to
the start-finish line. This left Randwick Botany riders Sean
O’Neill and Wayne Gould to do most of the work. Final
placings were Nicholas Rathbone (Eastern Suburbs), Luke
Davison (Randwick Botany) and Richard Westmoreland (Randwick
Botany) in his first ever cycle race, after only two training
rides with the club last week.

Disabled rider Will Elrick, who
rides with one leg, had a strong race in C-Grade.
Commissaires suggested to Will that he have a run in D
Grade but will would have no part of it. Will's specialty
is the 1000m sprint at the velodrome track, and is aiming
for selection in the Australian 2004 Athens Paralympic
team. |

The C Grade race over, but this did not stop other Randwick Botany riders, Greg Smart, Sean O'Neill and
Jonnathon Hoggard for sprinting it out for the minor
placings. Although Smartie took it, imagine how much
better we can get him going if we ever teach him to sprint
on "the drops". |
Club Treasurer Richard Jenkins
stayed with the D-Grade bunch for the duration of the 20km
event, with Gus Silva (Lidcombe Auburn) finishing first
followed by Carlo Ghisolfi (St George), who represented Italy
in the 1956 Olympics and Alex Lazich (Waratah Veterans).
A good E-Grade sprint saw David
Birss (Randwick Botany) just beat Sandie Jeffery (Randwick
Botany), John Siounis (Waratah Veterans) and Ross Fullerton (Randwick
Botany).
Junior racing will commence at 1pm
on Saturday 7 February 2004, with an exciting new junior race
programme developed by the Junior Development Committee. More
information can be obtained from the Junior Support Co-ordinator
