REPORT

 |
During the later stages of
the A grade race, Tom Brooks just rode away from the
peleton. Here he (pictured left) with not another
rider in sight. |
|
 |
The action was fast in
furious behind. Here Mark "Slapper" Robertson takes
the chasing peleton through the squircle. |
|
 |
After winning his inaugural
B-Grade race last week, Josh Marden again left everyone in
his wake to win the B-Grade 32km event at Heffron Park on
Saturday 20 March 2004. |
|
 |
The Southern
Cross whizz kids always together, always dictating the
pace of the race and generally sneaky tactics. |
|
I (-ed), was a couple of
riders behind Josh when we entered the straight into a
strong head wind. Josh went immediately and I
remember saying to myself, "Not now Josh, not 400 metres
out into a headwind" Besides the Heffron head
wind and the 400 metres to the line, he had the
Southern Cross wizz kids, Chris Guillan, Grant Patrick and
Keegan Aitchison right on his tail. Josh just
accelerated though, and just kept acceletating. In
fact I spoke to 2nd place getter, Chris Guillan after the
race who told me that he tried to go with Josh but Josh
just rode him off his wheel. The picture above shows
Josh throttling off for victory whilst 2nd place getter
Chris Guillan is still very much on the gas. |
Josh joined the Randwick Botany
Cycling Club in January and won his first D-Grade race in
February 2004. He quickly progressed through C-Grade,
recording wins in each race. ‘He should seriously consider a
crack at A-Grade’ commented Club President John Buckton after
the race. ‘If he does, it will be one of the fastest
progressions through the grades in the history of the
100-year-old club’ Buckton added.
Good to see Steve Issaksen down from
Lidcombe Auburn to test our C graders. As always, Arther
Driver is always in the final action. Good work by
Andrew Hall to keep these very experienced riders at bay.

Tyron
Bicknell, who recently placed second in the NSW
Interschools MTB championships, leads the C grade bunch
over the pimple. |
|
 |
Left, some of
the C grade action with FRF's Laura Bortolozzi leading the
peleton, Andrew Swan on her wheel and Matt Guillan sitting
in a little further back |
Steve Foster must be wondering if he has
body odour or something. Fine first place by Steve.
No Steve, Ronny Sproule is camera shy and Ben Hammond must
have been in a hurry to get home.
|
 |
Left, our own
Athens Para Olympian hopeful, Will Ellrick, drives the D
grade bunch up and over the pimple. |
|
 |
Will was all
smiles after the race. |
There was plenty of action in E grade
with yet another flying member of the Guillan family racing at
Heffron. Yes now that Chris and his gang of Southern
Cross whizz kids are giving us grief in B grade, Matty is
mixing it with the C graders, now Jim Guillan is giving the E
graders some hurry up.
The juniors competed in a 2km time
trial this week, with thirteen-year-old Tom Patton recording
the fastest time of 3min 16sec. Other junior riders included
Andrew Young, Ben Hammond, Sam Harrison, Adriano Maradini, Ben
Elliott, Andrew Weetman, Matthew Weetman, Ryan Sharpe and
Tylor Weetman.

In other junior news, Adam Hogan
from club sponsor Cheeky Monkey Multisport, 28 Clovelly Rd
Randwick, donated a new Merida junior road bike to the club.
The bike has Shimano groupset and will be used for junior
rider development.

Club President John Buckton along with ten
junior riders, accepted the donation at Heffron Park today.
