Apologies but no podium/action photos this week as we took the club camera to our Jindabyne Training Camp.  Photos of that camp soon.

Randwick Botany Club Captain Club Janelle Lindsay made a welcome return to racing at Heffron Park on Saturday 24 January 2004.  Janelle was badly injured following a training ride crash involving a careless driver during August 2003.  Janelle has made a strong recovery since the crash and to prove the point placed third in the 22km D-Grade race, averaging 35kmh during the race.  Other placegetters in D-Grade included Gordon Bradshaw (Waratah Veterans), Greg Fisher (Waratah Veterans) and Adam Bradstreet (Randwick Botany).

In a truly awesome demonstration of sheer power, David Stewart (Eastern Suburbs) blew the 9-rider A-Grade bunch apart midway through the 36km race. Simon Price (Eastern Suburbs) latched on and the pair put 500m on the chasing bunch.  Jersy Sowa (Randwick Botany), Roger Crawford (Randwick Botany), Luis Trueba (Lidcombe Auburn) and Ben Isaksen (Lidcombe Auburn) worked together to chase down the breakaway without success.  Stewart was simply too strong.  The pair completed a gentlemanly sprint with Stewart finishing just in front of teammate Price.  Sowa won the bunch sprint for third place.

Jason Webb made a breakaway during the last lap of the 32km B-Grade race and put 20m on the field leading into the final straight.  The main bunch stormed home and almost caught Webb on the line. “I would have beat Jason if the race was 10 metres longer”, commented third placegetter Karl Bellemy after the race.  Second place went to Grant Patrick (Southern Cross).

A huge C-Grade field raced for 28km, with two riders from the United Kingdom taking first and second place.  Andy Portess won the sprint followed by countryman Jamie Ward.  Third place went to Luke Davison (Randwick Botany) and fourth to Wayne O’Young (Randwick Botany).

Placegetters in E-Grade were Robert Capp (Waratah Veterans), Joe Gatt (Randwick Botany), John Siounis (Bankstown Sports) and David Birss (Randwick Botany).

Junior racing will commence at 1pm on Saturday 7 February 2004, with an exciting new junior race programme developed by the Junior Development Committee.  More information can be obtained from the Junior Support Co-ordinator Janette Murdoch.
