REPORT

Another cold and windy day at Heffron.  This, together with many of our top riders away at the Rosemount Open saw numbers down a little this week.

Left, our gallant band of Commissaires (and wanna-bes) made the decision, because of the reduced numbers, to combine A & B grades.

Early in the race, big Andy Hall, who is very fit at the moment directly attributable to the Fortuna training regime, led the bunch with A Grade happy to sit in.

This was short lived however as A grade got tired of B grades pace and hit off the front taking Dunstan Bertslinger with them.  Dunstan, being the gentleman that he is, felt compelled to come through and do turns and it wasn't long till the hurt set in and poor Dunstan found himself in no man's land between A grade and the chasing peleton.  Dean Preddy made a brave move and jumped off the front of the peleton in an effort to bridge across to the A graders, however he too found himself in No Man's land.  An excellent ride by Dunstan who managed to level peg A Grade for some 4 laps in the horrendously windy conditions before eventually being hauled back in by the chasing B peleton.

Whilst the race had started as an A&B combined, it turned into a separate A and B grade race.  In A grade, RBCC's Jerzy Sowa cruised in for an easy victory.

I was looking forward to seeing big Chris Reynolds turn out the 1000 watts plus of power in the sprint.  Chris however rode away from his B grade counterparts in the final lap and cruised in solo.

Thanks to the guidance of Frank Fortuna and the Fortuna training method, Chris has been transformed from perhaps the best sprinter in our club, into an endurance athlete.  Oh well I guess Chris has a couple of tricks in his bag now.  He can win either way.

C grade stayed together early but the wind took it's toll and the peleton was strewn out into small groups and retirees.

Tony Caruana had a great race.  He actually got the wind on his chest as he came alongside young Kurt Adams in the sprint but quickly settled back on the wheel to take second place.

D Grade was fast and furious with Randwick Botany's Peter Heywood and Mark Murdoch doing much of the work on the front.  Big Paul "Ginge" Baker sat in waiting to pounce.

Gloria (Mrs) Baker was happy to flag marshal but even happier to collect Paul's winnings.  So much for the "secret kick"

Joe Gatt was absent for the podium photo.  Now I am warning you people.  If you do not put your ugly mugs in Tony's podium shots, I will paint you in graphically (in perhaps not too flattering positions).  Right is my interpretation of how the photo may have looked if Joe had actually turned up to have his photo taken.

The juniors had 2 handicap events conducted with the girls pictured left giving the boys a bit of hurry up.  Good on you girls.
