THANK YOU:
Thanks to Commissaires Joanne Buckton
and Helen Vella. Thanks to our safety
marshals. Thanks to Dale Rockel who blew the track. Thanks to Fred Vella who deployed & retrieved all the safety
equipment and manned the canteen. Thanks to Roy Magil from the St John
Ambulance.
REPORT
I apologise for
the lateness of this web report. I realised Sunday morning
that the acrid electrical smell that we had experienced Sat
evening was in fact the smell of a 350 watt power supply, a
computer mainboard and a 2 gigahertz CPU reducing themselves
to ashes. (I saved the ram and my hard drives
fortunately but the rest is a collective boat anchor)

The first
Randwick Botany Cycling Club criterium race for 2004 at
Heffron Park featured a 2-man breakaway in the 36km
A-Grade event. Robbie Cater and rapidly improving RBCC
rider, Peter Mcdonald, shown left worked well together to
stay away from the A Grade peleton. |

Watched by
his parents (left) visiting from Armidale, Peter McDonald
paired with young-gun Robert Cater to put 300m on the
chasing A-Grade bunch by the closing stages of the race.
Robbie Cater won the sprint and congratulated Peter
McDonald on the warm down lap for a gusty performance in
hot and sunny conditions. |

Peter, who has only started racing early in 2003 has gone
from D grade to A Grade in less than 12 months. Now
he is swapping turns with Robbie Cater. It is indeed
a feat even to stay with Robbie as anyone who has ridden
against him knows.
Cyclingnews.com editor and RBCC
member, Jeff Jones won the bunch sprint for third place,
followed home by Michael Cowan. |

Roger
Crawford did a solo break in the B-Grade 32km race and
didn’t look back. Left Roger out alone with the A Grade
peleton just about to catch him (or did big Roger just
pass the A grade peleton). In any event the B Grade
peleton are not even in sight. |
|
Brendan Ingram tried to bridge
the gap a few times, but returned to the bunch to fight
out the sprint and second place, followed by Andy Matthews
and young Thomas Murdoch. |

C-Grade set a casual
average speed of only 33kmh over 28km - perhaps recovering
from the excesses of the festive season? “It was an easy
pace today”, commented Arthur Driver (Penrith Panthers-
seen left first wheel) who placed first. |
|
Good to see
RBCC's Suzy Jackson move up a grade. Suzy pictured
third wheel behind self confessed wheel sucking expert,
Tony Caruana. The fox Shaun
Ballesty can be seen hiding down the back of the peleton
and waiting. Over thirty years of racing experience
paid off with the fox eventualy placing second to Arthur
Driver with RBCC junior rider Luke Davison third. |

Not much info on the D grade race I'm
afraid. Ritchie Jenkins (pictured left) looked
pretty happy and raring to go at the start. In the
end it was RBCC's Andrew Swan who took victory from Grant
Chellew and George Youhanna. |

The E Grade field is getting bigger
every week which is good to see. Norman and Julia
won't know what hit them when they get back to racing.
Our own Sandie Jeffrey is improving week by week with an
excellent third place this wee. Keep up the good
work Sandie. |

In case anyone is wondering why they
haven't seen Liam Kelly racing or out training lately it's
because he's got a broken elbow and is in a cast.
Liam is not going to let a little thing like a broken arm
and a cast get in the way of his training though, I bumped
into him today at our sponsor Cheeky Monkey. Liam
was having a bike purpose built with special time trial
bars to rest his cast on. Should see him zooming
around soon. Good luck keeping up with him. |

Good to see Sean Bloch back training
and racing. I am a little concerned however about
our race committee thinking about a kilo as a round of
the club championship. The kilo is Shaun's
speciality and when fit he does them on par with Shane
Kelly's times. (around 1 min 5's) Not to mention his speed
(high 10's for the flying 200) |

If you were wondering why Team FRF
were not in the placings in B Grade. Frank had a
little tumble on the bell lap. Thankfully he is Ok.
My informants tell me that Rocky slowed down to make sure
his team mate was ok and given that Rocky only rides in
big ring/11, by the time he got it wound back up again,
the race was all over. |
