REPORT

Today was very much an "attacking day" as most of the grades were split into a series of bunches.  I don't particularly know why as it was quite windy as usual however many of the bunches were blown to pieces with riders finishing in dribs and drabs.

Even Anthony "The King" Spurgeon attacked off the front of A grade.  Spurge seems superbly fit at the moment and when not attacking off the front could be seen often at the front of the bunch driving it.

Finally a group of about five riders including Spurge, Nick Rathbourne, Pat Naughton, George Pappas and  Jeff Jones managed to get away from the chasing A grade peloton.

The Chasing A grade peloton worked hard but were unable to recapture the escapees.

The Bell lap and the A grade front group is down to 4.  Randwick Botany's Jeff "Doc" Jones leads them home while Pat Naughton sits on the back conserving energy for the sprint.

With The King throwing a chain, the sprint came down to Randwick Botany's Pat Naughton and Easts young gun Nick Rathbourne.  Pat throws for the line to edge out Nick who is really reefing on those handlebars and giving his all.  Cycling News.com's Jeff "Doc" Jones cruises in for third place.

More of the same in B Grade with attacks happening all the time.  This one early in the piece by new RBCC member, Wayne Doods who sticks about 100 metres into the chasing peloton.

Wayne is quickly brought back and the Randwick Botany "Heavies" control the pace at the front.  I do mean "Heavies" with many of these guys in the 90 kilo plus club.  Andy Hall throws a salute to the camerman.

Frank Fortuna, has a go and tests the B grade bunch.  Eventual winner, Clive Hammerson and Karl Bellamy are seen at front ready to launch a counter attack.

Eventually in a counter attack, four of the guys get away.  RBCC is dominating the B grade event with Karl "The Body" Bellamy, Andy "The Colonel" Hall, Clive "Strong Man" Hammerson and Pat "Paddy" Jones launcing off the front of the B grade bunch and putting a huge gap on them.

The going gets a bit hot for Karl and Andy and they drop back to join the peloton.  Clive and Pat work well together swapping off turns to stay away from the chasing bunch.  Left Clive cruises in for victory on the inside of one of the dropped A graders with Pat head down and sprinting in for second place.

The Peloton sprint was always going to be interesting with big Roger Crawford who is very fast in there.  However it is our resident pocket rocket RBCC's Luke Davison, National 250 metre time trial champion who gets those legs spinning like a blur and big Roger can't do much than sit behind.  Roger cruises in for second place.

C grade is no different and big Craig Blundell tests the C grade bunch and gets about 50 metres on them.  This is indeed a rare photo with Tony Caruana being caught out in the middle and having to come across the break.  I don't think I have ever seen Tony miss the bus before.

Eventual winner, Little Tom Patton stirs up the C grade bunch with an attack off the front.  Tom has the complete package both a big engine and a pretty strong kick so he is able to win either way.  Today he chose the sprint.

Simon Llewellyn of the Dulwich Hill club has no answer to the young speed demon and sits up satisfied to claim a well earned second placing.

The Steam Tri club turned up in numbers today and quickly set about controlling the D grade race.  Left, the "Steam Train" powers over the pimple and down into the netball courts.

The E grade bunch and RBCC's Lee Emery leads the E grade field early in the race.  Several attacks later saw the bunch busted up into a series on one's and two riders.  I must apologise to you E grade, it was hard to keep tabs on you all over the place and the leader must have come through hidden by another bunch or something.  I realised later by the times that I had missed a lap.  Anyway an extra one won't hurt you.

Great rides by Rosanna Fortuna, John Lynch and Ian Reid.  John rode away and was able to maintain the gap back to Rosanna and Ian who worked well together.  In a great sprint for second Rosanna narrowly beat Ian.  Good on you Rosanna.

At the end of the Seniors, The Juniors Christmas party was held.  There were plenty of nibbles and every junior rider was presented with a prise of some sort for their efforts this year.  Major Prise winners were Janette Murdoch (our Junior Support Officer), Luke Davison, Tom Patton and Ben Elliot. A most enjoyable afternoon.  For full story, click here.
