JUNIORS

Juniors had a skills day this week with Tanya Bosche. Cycling in
close proximity of other riders was very much the theme of the
day. Juniors rode with their arms around one another and
practised "slinging" like our Olympic gold medalist O'Grady &
Browne.

REPORT
|
|
|
 |
Big Roger Crawford and
Chris "Spongee" Jenkins get a little distance on the A grade peloton.
There were a few people upset on Saturday, certainly pandamonium in the
finish straight and I think I should explain. C Grade was
finishing and shortly behind them was both A & B grade who were both on
their bell lap. Our Commissaire decided to bell ONLY B however
being really busy performing the rold of chief judge and timekeeper all
rolled into one. |
|
She was recording the number of C grade finishers and didn't
have time to grab the bell as B grade closed behind. She
called out to a person to "Bell B". This person picked
up the bell and proceeded to wave the bell like Santa Claus at
Christmas time. Unfortunately as A was also now mixed up
with B, some of the A graders thought it was their bell as
well. Joanne had intended to let A do another lap to
separate the bunches. She called the marshals by radio
in an effort to inform A grade. I know that several B
grade riders were shouting at A graders to do another lap and
I heard several A graders acknowledge. Despite all good
intentions there were several A graders who sprinted next lap
(right in the middle of the B grade sprint). The bottom
line is this: This is club racing, not the World Cup.
There is sometimes, (as was the case today), a situation where
one person is trying to be Commissaire, timekeeper and judge
all rolled into one, for 3 grades. Common sense would
surely dictate that if you were mixed up with another grade as
you passed the start finish line and heard the bell, surely
you would try to work out who's bell it was before you
sprinted the next lap. Before you spit your dummy and
wander off in a huff mumbling under your breath, remember that
my wife gives of her own time, does the best she can,
sometimes sitting in the cold and/or rain for hours so in the
words of another regular Commissaire, "If they think they can
do better, the job's open." Now back to the results. |

When I saw this photo, I thought that
Tony H, our photographer, had lost it again, focussing on the guy
crossing the track with the "stuned mullet look" on his face. Then
suddenly I realised that Tony was capturing via photographic evidence,
the fact that I was not sitting on the back but was in fact up the road.
You can see Sydney rider, Andrew Hudson attacking off the front of the
peloton to get across to me. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Andrew Hudson and I spent a couple of
laps working together and we didn't have a lot left in the tank (well I
didn't anyway), before I heard something which had the instant effect of
slowing me down. Our Commissaire singing out "7 to go".
Andrew likewise thought it a good idea to sit up and wait. |

Here's the chasing B peloton with Kev
Black at the front with Rocky Fortuna tucked in behind him. I
heard that Rocky came through for a big turn and chased down the break
but I know that must have been all lies because my mate Rocky would
never chase down a team mate, Would you Rocky? |

|
|
 |
The C grade peloton and some of our
recently upgraded "D" graders looked pretty comfortable in the bunch.
New "C" grader, Tony Aitchison looks very comfortable tucked in the
middle of the bunch. C Grade stalwart, Tony Caruana is always up
in the first half dozen riders. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Tyron Bicknell seen left in first wheel
had a great race with an eventual second place. Tim Bunnel, tucked
in second wheel, also had a good race. |
|
|
|
|
 |
Warick McCalpine leads the D grade bunch
over the pimple. Our handicappers got a "Little Fairdinkum" this
week and gave 17 "D graders" their C grade walking orders. Some of
these D grader actually raced C grade this week which was good. We
managed to get the D grade average speed down to 36.5kph which was I
think actually slower than C grade which was good and for the first time
in weeks, D grade yardstick Ron Sproule placed third and didn't go "out
the back" |
|
In the background of above shot
is undercover B grade spy, Karl Bellamy. I sent my
undercover agent out in the D grade bunch to ascertain the
shonks who rip everyone's legs off and refuse to go up a
grade. Unfortunately Karl pictured above, right down the
back, went "Out the back" in about 2 laps. I will
have to send an A grade spy into the bunch. Jason
Douglas savored victory in this his farewell D grade race.
Congratulations to Simon Vizar on a fine second placing and
welcome also to C grade. Guys, D grade is our
entry level. The average speed should be about 30-33kph
(NOT 36.5kph!!!!) Do yourselves a favour and make the
move before you are told to. C grade and B grade you are
on notice. Some of you are in my sights as well. Not
mentioning any names (Chris Young, Nick Rathbone, John Revez
and Tyron Bicknell) |
|
|
|
|
 |
Simon Vizar looks pretty happy as he
cruises in for second place. Sorry Jason, I think that you must
have been going too fast for Tony to shoot you. Meanwhile a little
further back and just in front of the peleton, a fine third place by Ron
Sproule. Good on you Ron. |
|
|
|
|
Sorry E grade. no action shots of you this week.
Well that's it for another week |
