REPORT

I was speaking to Sean Bloch before racing and Sean looked lean and very fit.  As soon as he told me that he was training 2 days a week I immediately put money on him for the win in the A/B combined race.  Sean was a world class Olympic kilo rider and has absolutely mind boggling acceleration when he opens up on full throttle.  I am dying to see Sean go head to head with the big fella Chris "Brutus" Reynolds.  Now that will be something to see.

With most of our A graders away at the Canberra tour Matty Lucas was looking fairly confident before the race especially when Helen and Joanne announced that it would be an A/B combined event.  Well they shook Rocky and myself fairly smartly with an early average in the race over 40kph, so Rocky and I were pretty impressed about that.

Left, Matty our RBCC sprinting coach gets a sprint lesson himself.  Both the boys in classic sprinters "throw at the line" pose.  Frank Fortuna, whose RBCC uniform was dirty and he grabbed the first old thing that he found in his drawer, told me that he was on Matt's wheel and had intended to stay behind Matt for as long as possible and then have a last second dig for victory.  However when he saw the speed at which Blochey came past on the outside, he just sat up.

Sean O'Neill drives the A/B bunch down the straight with Chris White sitting in close to the front.  Whitey tried the now infamous "Whitey Manouvre" yet again this week, going off the front on the bell lap about 1 kilometre from home.  Now last week he went later and got swallowed up about 3/4 of the way down the start finish straight.  This time he looked like he was dragging the Titanic behind him and got swallowed up about half way down the start/finish straight.  I'm not getting it Whitey.  What's the strategy here??  Maybe next week if you go on the bell at the start/finish line you can watch every man and his dog go past you over the pimple.

Karl Bellamy didn't race this week but that didn't stop him sharing his pearls of wisdom with the boys before the start of the A/B race.  Karl, I don't mind you going through racing strategies with the RBCC boys can you be a little more careful in future as it is quite obvious that you had a Caravello spy listening in.

Left, recently crowned 2004 Mens U15 NSW rider of the year, Luke Davison takes the A/B bunch through corner 1.

The C grade bunch packed in tight as they negotiate corner 1.  Far right is eventual winner Rodney Mendez soon to test himself up in B grade.  On the left side in RBCC retro kit is RBCC's Tony Caruana.  Tony is waiting for the call.  He tells me that he hasn't heard anything yet but we remain hopeful and I think that it would be quite a status symbol for RBCC if Tony is elected Pope.  The mind bobbles.  A two wheeled Pope Mobile.

Rodney Mendez keeps a close watch on Caravello young gun Richard Lang. Dominic Caravello brought the boys down to Heffron for a bit of team tactics practice last week.  Richard must have enjoyed the racing because he was back again this week stirring up the C grade bunch with Dad Roland watching.

I spent a few laps on the back of C grade this week and was very impressed with the way Roy OToole (light blue jersey) was riding.  Left Roy can be seen surrounded by fellow RBCC riders.  Roy rode very strongly and to put it delicately, Roy is no spring chicken any more.  Mark Davies pictured just in front of Roy is also riding very strongly at the moment and tells me that it his hope to ride up in B grade in the near future.

Big Barry looked pretty "Fair Dinkum" this week as he got his pre race manipulation and massage from Leeann.  Self appointed D grade correspondent, George Tragaris informs me that it did him no good as "Big Barry Mourad strained a muscle while stretching on the start line before the race and had to pull out after 1 lap."  There is no information as to which muscle Big Bazza strained.  Suffice to say that we have exonerated Leeann as it was Barry who had to get that little bit extra stretch at the start line which apparently did the damage.

What would D grade be like without big Paul Dimitriou driving from the front.  Paul loves it out there.  Loves to feel the wind in his face and on his chest. (Personally I hate the feeling - but I digress).  Good on you Paul.  D grade correspondent George Tragaris attributes his victory partly to your assistance in keeping the pace high.  You are going to have to help someone else now though Paul as George as elected to become C grade correspondent.

E grade action and Tony captures a good picture of Charles Dalrymple-Hay negotiating turn number 1(after the start/finish line).  It is interesting to note that many of the D and E grade riders race on the hoods then there a few C graders but as you go up to A & B grade the riders are almost entirely on the drops.  D's and E's take note.  You get lower and more aerodynamic also you drop your pump (heart) lower and it does less work to pump blood to the head and upper body.  You will go faster, believe me.
