REPORT
Slightly more than average gale force winds at Heffron on
Saturday saw the races reduced in distance by our Commissaire,
Helen Vella due to safety concerns of riders.
|
 |
A & B grades started together and it
wasn't long before B grade rider Shaun O'Neill was
demonstrating to everyone his new found leap in fitness.
Shaun went on to be first B grade rider home. About
half way through the race East rider and Heffron regular
John Kenny went off the front in the windy conditions and
whilst I have often given John a hard time suggesting that
he didn't know what the wind felt like on his chest, he
certainly demonstrated that such was certainly not the case,
as he rode away from the chasing peleton in the gale force
conditions. Sorry John but I didn't get a shot of you
in action. |
|
 |
A large C grade peleton battles the
windy conditions down the Heffron Park start/finish
straight. In fact our Commissaire felt the gale force winds
presented a bit of a hazard to the riders and cut the races
back in distance by giving the one lap to go bell early. |
| |
|
|
 |
The C grade sprint and Rhys Fagan
cruises in having a quick look around to see where everyone
else is. Bit of contraversy in that RBCC's
resident sprinter, Big Bazza Mourad, thought when he heard
the bell it was someone selling ice cream or the like.
He told me later that he thought that it was NOT the real
one lap bell as it was rung a little "half heartedly"
He said that had he known it was the "Real Bell" he would
most certainly have won because he was in good position and
good form and wondered why everyone suddenly attacked.
Yeah Baz, of course we believe you !! |
|
Actually we were unsure who
actually got third place as many of the riders left straight
away given the windy conditions before actually claiming
their places. The above photo tends to suggest that it
might have been RBCC junior Tim Duncan who is charging down
the left hand side of the track. I had no trouble in
getting someone to "stand in" for third place getter as Big
Baz almost knocked us over getting into the photo.
|
| |
|
|
 |
Here's the D grade peleton, first lap
whilst I was able to capture them all together. After
that a few strong riders turned on the pace and blew the
peleton to pieces. |
| |
|
|
 |
Talking about strong D grade riders,
here's eventual winner Leo Neil_Dwyer driving the bunch over
the pimple with last week's winner Steven Price hot on his
heels and Mark Burgess (last week's 2nd place getter) in
third place. Congratulations to Simon Steel brand new
RBCC member who took 2nd place in his first race. In
fact congratulations to Neil, Simon, Mark and Steven who
have all been promoted to C grade. |

|
|
 |
With lots of disappointment being
experienced lately in the Fortuna clan (most notably the
dismal failure of that young hopeful bright eyed and bushy
tailed talented youngster Rocky Fortuna who was touted to be
the next Lance Armstrong), the Fortuna cheer squad was
out in force to cheer on their latest hopeful Anthony
Fortuna in his first ever race. Taking a photo of the
Fotuna family is like shooting a Colnago C50 advertisement. |
| |
|
|
 |
And unlike the aforementioned "Soft"
uncle, Anthony did not let the side down. Here he is
powering along on his Cinelli (Real men ride Cinelli),
driving E grade up the start/ finish straight. |
| |
|
|
 |
More E grade action as big Matty Hynes
drives the boys over dizzying heights of "The Summit"
of the notorious Heffron Park pimple. |
| |
|
|
 |
Not bad for his first race.
Anthony cruises in for first place with big Matty Hynes
charging home for second. |
| |
|
|
 |
It was a battle of titanic proportions
as the truly "Big Men" of racing put everything to the test,
including the lycra, in the F grade event. Joe
Gatt has John Siounis a little worried as he starts to
open a little gap going powering over the Heffron Park
pimple. |
| |
|
Well that's it till next week.
