REPORT
Well my first
race at Heffron for a LONG time and I thought I would
forgo the pleas to Joanne about being sick, and haven't
ridden for a while etc etc, and just bite the bullet and
ride B grade. So, much to the amusement of several
other members, I donned a B grade number with no
intention of being competitive but with the goal of at
least having the bunch in sight on the 16th lap.
Boy did I get my bubble burst.
I suffered
like a dog for 5 laps before hitting the wall.
Heart rate monitor was stuck on max. Then I
realised that B grade was doing 3 minute laps.
This confirmed with Joanne after the race with splits
5:11, 8:11, 11:11 on the dot!! that's 40kph plus
average.
When I
dropped off B grade, I jumped on the back of C and found
myself free wheeling for most of the lap. What a
difference I thought. My suspicions were confirmed
after some quick speed distance calcs on the various
grades at the conclusion of racing.
A Open grade
who started 1 min 30 behind A grade finished in 53:37
which is an average speed of 40.6kph
A Club,
except for 2 (Matthew Yaxley and Stan Genakis) who were
able to stay with the A Open riders as they came
through, finished as a bunch in a time of 56:58 which is
an average speed of 38.3kph
B grade
finished 16 laps in 49 mins 5 sec which equates to an
average speed of 39.5kph
I can't for
the life of me figure out why we have to drag some B
graders out kicking and screaming to A grade when they
are quite clearly A (club) graders. We are
not asking you to ride A open with Rollo and Matty Lucas
and co, we are asking you to ride A club which is in
reality a B plus grade.
Same goes for C
grade. We didn't get times but there were clearly very
strong riders who launched off the front of the Peleton on the
first lap and were never seen again. Some of these have
already been given a free ticket to B grade.
I hate to sound
negative, but if there is one constant source of complaint at
Heffon it is the word "ring in" or "burglar". If you are
doing it easy in a grade, then ask Joanne to try your hand up a
grade. You don't have to win before going up. You
may never win as this is an honour reserved largely for
sprinters.
