Masters Road Championships – Orange – 30 April 2016

by Sue Henry
The beautiful town of Orange was the venue for the 2016 State Masters Championships. RBCC had 22 members participating during the course of the weekend and it was lovely to see the camaraderie between us all and just as importantly our supporters. One of the highlights was meeting the “other” halves who I am sure we would all agree, without them what we do would not be possible!

2016 Orange States

Road Race
Saturday was the Road Race which started at a small town called Molong, about 30 minutes out of Orange. Unfortunately we awoke to grey skies and rain which really only impeded the early starters of Dave Jackson, Stephen Collier and Charles Dalrymple-Hay. The weather cleared up nicely as the day went on! Notable performances in the road race, which was held over a challenging 28km lap course, with the end of each lap and sprint finish being on a serious hill (really only fun for mountain goats), were:

Geoff Baxter – Silver in MMAS5
Sue Henry – Silver in WMAS3

There were lots of comments after the race that never before at States have we seen all the age groups end up so destroyed throughout the race with a lot of DNFs and people riding solo.

Sunday, and again with stormy looking clouds threatening to put a damper on things, the criterium was held in an industrial estate just on the outskirts of Orange. The course was a 1.6km loop with one hill and a fast descent followed by an uphill drag through the finish line, which was into a nice head/cross wind that picked up throughout the day. Again the speed and conditions caused havoc in all the age groups and breakaways ended up being quite successful, leaving a large peloton racing for pride as the medals were long gone! The club was well represented in most age groups and we had two medallists:

David Jackson – Gold in MMAS6
Sue Henry – Gold in WMAS3

Time Trial
The last and some would say “race of truth” was the time trial. After awaking to 2 degrees the sun came out and warmed up a little by the time most of us started! The course was 22.5km in length and a loop out around the Orange airport. Conditions were pretty good and there were some fired up people in the start house! Well done to the following who were on the podium:

Kevin Charman – Gold in MMAS6
David Jackson – Bronze in MMAS6
Anna Murray – Bronze in WMAS5
Sue Henry – Silver in WMAS3
