ROAD RATIOS

The following chart is again based on a 700mm rim and a 23C tyre.  The gear ratios are fairly common for today's 9 speed and 10 speed group sets.  The ratios are based on front chain rings of 53 teeth and 39 teeth with a rear cluster from 11 to 25.  Once again for amusement I have included a cadence and speed field.  The cadence selected is again 165.  It is interesting to note on line 1 of this chart that in "big ring eleven" one would be doing 101kph.

Here's a bit of news for those of you that think that cadences over 200 are unachievable:

" 44 year old Manfred Nüscheler has set a new speed record for riding on stationary rollers, clocking 164.1 km/h in Berne, Switzerland on September 16, 2000. The record was set using a 54x11 (10.49 m) gear on a standard bike (Moser frame with Campagnolo gear) on Minoura rollers. The old record was 160.4 km/h.

During the attempt, Nüscheler rode at between 269 and 284 rpm, demonstrating that leg speed is not necessarily lost as one gets older."
